What Does the Brain Have to Keep Working at Its Best? Resilience Mechanisms Such as Antioxidants and Brain/Cognitive Reserve for Counteracting Alzheimer's Disease Degeneration

Davide Maria Cammisuli et al.

Summary: Alzheimer's disease is a major challenge in terms of social and medical costs. Neuroprotective effects and antioxidants play a crucial role in countering cognitive deterioration in elderly individuals. Higher cognitive reserve reduces the impact of disease-related brain changes on cognition. Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) could be a potential target for intervention, where antioxidants can contribute to delaying cognitive decline and crossing the threshold for clinical dementia at a later stage.

Oxidative stress and antioxidant defenses in mild cognitive impairment: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Gallayaporn Nantachai et al.

Summary: This study systematically reviewed and meta-analyzed the nitro-oxidative stress (O&NS)/antioxidant (ANTIOX) ratio in the peripheral blood of individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). The results showed that MCI individuals have higher O&NS/ANTIOX ratio, increased lipid peroxidation and O&NS-associated toxicity, and reduced glutathione defenses compared to healthy controls. MCI is also associated with increased homocysteine and decreased non-vitamin and vitamin antioxidant defenses. The findings suggest that MCI is partly attributed to neuro-oxidative toxicity and highlight the potential of lipid peroxidation and the glutathione system as targets for MCI treatment or prevention.

2022 Alzheimer's disease facts and figures

Joseph Gaugler et al.

Summary: This article discusses the impact of Alzheimer's disease on public health, including its incidence, prevalence, mortality and morbidity rates, healthcare costs and caregivers' burden. It also addresses the perspectives of consumers and primary care physicians on mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and the need for improved awareness, diagnosis, and treatment. The article emphasizes the increasing number of individuals living with Alzheimer's and the challenges faced by caregivers and healthcare providers, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Oxidative Stress and Cognitive Decline: The Neuroprotective Role of Natural Antioxidants

Ferdinando Franzoni et al.

Summary: Free-radicals formed during oxidative phosphorylation can lead to oxidative stress in the brain, where antioxidant molecules are crucial in limiting damage. Understanding the relationship between natural antioxidant molecules and the Central Nervous System is key in combating neurodegenerative diseases.
