Topography of immune cell infiltration in different stages of coronary atherosclerosis revealed by multiplex immunohistochemistry

Kimberley R. G. Cortenbach et al.

Summary: This study investigated immune cells and subsets in different stages of coronary artery disease using a novel mIHC technique. The results showed increased numbers of CD3+ T cells, CD20+ B cells, CD68+ macrophages, CD15+ neutrophils, and CD31+ endothelial cells in diseased coronary arteries compared to normal. The type of immune response did not differ substantially between different stages of plaque development.

Structural abnormalities in the non-dilated ascending aortic wall of bicuspid aortic valve patients

Nimrat Grewal et al.

Summary: Non-dilated ascending aortic wall in patients with bicuspid aortic valve is characterized by a thinner intimal layer, thicker medial layer with more mucoid extracellular matrix accumulation, and less differentiated vascular smooth muscle cells compared to patients with tricuspid aortic valve. Other medial pathologic features are more prominent in patients with tricuspid aortic valve.

Wall Shear Stress Predicts Aortic Dilation in Patients With Bicuspid Aortic Valve

Andrea Guala et al.

Summary: This study assessed the predictive value of wall shear stress (WSS) for the growth rate (GR) of the ascending aorta (AAo) in patients with bicuspid aortic valve (BAV). The results showed a positive correlation between WSS and its circumferential component with AAo GR. Therefore, the evaluation of WSS may be helpful in the follow-up of these patients.

Association of Regional Wall Shear Stress and Progressive Ascending Aorta Dilation in Bicuspid Aortic Valve

Gilles Soulat et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the predictive role of wall shear stress (WSS) in the growth of the ascending aorta (AAo). It found that higher rates of AAo dilation were associated with larger areas of elevated WSS in patients with bicuspid aortic valve (BAV), suggesting that measuring WSS can help identify BAV patients who require closer follow-up.

Normal and abnormal development of the aortic valve and ascending aortic wall: a comprehensive overview of the embryology and pathology of the bicuspid aortic valve

Nimrat Grewal et al.

Summary: Bicuspid aortic valve is a common congenital heart anomaly associated with an increased risk of aortic aneurysm and dissection. Abnormalities in vascular smooth muscle cells, turbulent blood flow, and embryonic development defects contribute to the pathogenesis of aortopathy. Understanding these factors may help in predicting and managing aortic complications in patients with bicuspid aortic valve.

A Systematic Histopathologic Evaluation of Type-A Aortic Dissections Implies a Uniform Multiple-Hit Causation

Nimrat Grewal et al.

Summary: The pathological features of TAAD include moderate elastic fiber fragmentation/loss, mucoid extracellular matrix accumulation, among others, while the control group shows fewer of these characteristics. Based on the study, it can be hypothesized that TAAD is associated with developmental defects of the ascending aorta and a triple-hit mechanism.
