Prevalence, awareness, treatment, and control of hypertension in China, 2004-18: findings from six rounds of a national survey

Mei Zhang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the recent trends in prevalence and management of hypertension in China, nationally and by population subgroups. The results showed that the standardized prevalence of hypertension in adults aged 18-69 in China increased from 20.8% in 2004 to 29.6% in 2010 and then decreased to 24.7% in 2018. Despite modest improvements in awareness, treatment, and control of hypertension, rates remained low in 2018. Of the estimated 274 million adults with hypertension in 2018, control was inadequate in approximately 240 million individuals. The gap in hypertension control between urban and rural areas persisted.

Arterial Stiffness, Body Mass Index and Cardiovascular Disease Risk in Chinese Females at Various Ages

Lin Jin et al.

Summary: This study explored the relationship between arterial stiffness parameters and cardiovascular disease risk in Chinese females based on age and body mass index. The findings revealed a significant J-shaped relationship between age and arterial pressure volume index (API) and arterial velocity pulse index (AVI). There was also a linear association between API and BMI. Additionally, the study demonstrated that API and BMI are correlated with 10-year cardiovascular risk in females. Therefore, API can serve as an early detection tool for cardiovascular disease and enable preventive therapy.

Relationship of Arterial Stiffness and Central Hemodynamics With Cardiovascular Risk In Hypertension

Lin Jin et al.

Summary: This study included 4,311 participants aged 20 to 79 years and found that uncontrolled hypertension is associated with increased arterial stiffness and central artery pressure, which are important predictors of cardiovascular disease risk.

Increased arterial pressure volume index and cardiovascular risk score in China

Lin Jin et al.

Summary: This study explores the use of the non-invasive arterial stiffness index (API) as a marker for residual stress in the peripheral muscular arteries in clinical settings, and investigates its association with cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk in China. The results show a U-shaped association between API and the China-PAR score, suggesting that API may play an important role in predicting CVD risk in the Chinese population.

Summary: This study found U-shaped associations between arterial velocity pulse index (AVI) and arterial pressure volume index (API) with Framingham cardiovascular disease risk score (FCVRS). The appropriate range of AVI or API may be significant for preventing cardiovascular diseases and early treatment.

Arterial Stiffness and Cardiovascular Risk in Hypertension

Pierre Boutouyrie et al.

Summary: Arterial stiffness is a key marker of risk in hypertension, and can be measured at material or structural levels. Studies have shown that structural stiffness predicts outcomes, with elastic arteries being most sensitive to blood pressure and age. Stiffness is considered an index of vascular aging and affects brain, kidneys, and heart function. Reduction of stiffness through antihypertensive treatments and preventive drugs may have additional benefits beyond lowering blood pressure. Newer anti-inflammatory drugs also have effects on stiffness independent of blood pressure.

The Lancet women and cardiovascular disease Commission: reducing the global burden by 2030

Birgit Vogel et al.

Summary: Despite decades of grassroots campaigns to raise awareness about cardiovascular disease in women, there has been stagnation in reducing the overall burden of the disease in the past decade. This Commission aims to fill knowledge gaps and provide recommendations to reduce the global burden of cardiovascular disease in women by 2030, with a focus on raising awareness of gender-related disparities.

Summary: The study validated the WHO CVD risk charts for East Asia in the Chinese population, indicating a potential overestimation of risk. The laboratory-based charts successfully identified high-risk individuals, while the non-laboratory-based charts showed poor performance for the diabetic population.
