Gut microbiota dysbiosis promotes age-related atrial fibrillation by lipopolysaccharide and glucose-induced activation of NLRP3-inflammasome

Yun Zhang et al.

Summary: By using a faecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) rat model, it was demonstrated that the high AF susceptibility of aged rats could be transmitted to a young host. Inhibition of inflammasome by a potent and selective inhibitor of the NLRP3 inflammasome resulted in a lower atrial fibrosis and AF susceptibility. Clinical studies showed that serum LPS and glucose levels were progressively increased in elderly patients compared to young individuals, with similar results confirmed in clinical AF patients.

Metabolic Reprogramming, Gut Dysbiosis, and Nutrition Intervention in Canine Heart Disease

Qinghong Li

Summary: This review provides a comprehensive overview of recent advances in systems biology research on canine cardiac disease, focusing on bioenergetics and amino acid metabolism in myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) and heart failure (HF). It discusses the changes in the three components of energy metabolism and the potential role of the gut microbiome in MMVD and HF, highlighting the importance of nutrition in addressing these changes and slowing disease progression in dogs.

The heart and gut relationship: a systematic review of the evaluation of the microbiome and trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO) in heart failure

Kelley M. Anderson et al.

Summary: There is a growing body of research on the bidirectional relationship between the human gut microbiome and cardiovascular disease, including heart failure. A systematic review on the evaluation and testing of the gut biome in patients with heart failure found that patients with heart failure had lower biodiversity in fecal samples compared to controls. Trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO) is associated with the development, severity, and poor outcomes of heart failure.

Naoxintong Capsule Alternates Gut Microbiota and Prevents Hyperlipidemia in High-Fat-Diet Fed Rats

Yihang Lu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the regulation of gut microbiota and lipid metabolism by Naoxintong Capsule (NXT), a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) widely used in the treatment of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. The results showed that NXT had a potential preventive effect on hyperlipidemia and could reconstitute the gut microbiota in high fat diet-fed rats. The study also identified potential therapeutic biomarkers of NXT, including propionic acid, Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio (F/B), and the relative abundance of Collinsella.

Modulation effects of danshen-honghua herb pair on gut microbiota of acute myocardial ischemia model rat

Shao-Bing Du et al.

Summary: This study investigated the potential protective mechanism of Danshen-Honghua herb pair (DHHP) in rats with acute myocardial ischemia (AMI) induced by isoproterenol (ISO). The results showed that DHHP improved ischemic myocardial injury by ameliorating the dysbiosis of gut microbiota composition. This study provides insights into the anti-myocardial ischemia mechanisms of DHHP.

Polysaccharides: bowel health and gut microbiota

Moon Ho Do et al.

Summary: Polyasaccharides, including starch, non-starch polysaccharides (NSPs), and resistant starch (RS), have various biological benefits for bowel health by influencing gut microbiota and short chain fatty acids (SCFA). The physiological impacts of NSPs and RS on intestinal health are similar, with effects such as anti-inflammation and immune modulation. Bacterial and host-derived polysaccharides play important roles in immune modulation and overall intestinal health, suggesting further studies on polysaccharides are crucial for bowel health.

Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide: Biosynthesis, consumption and therapeutic role in cardiac diseases

Cynthia Tannous et al.

Summary: Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) is a crucial cofactor involved in various cellular processes, playing roles in redox status, energy metabolism, and gene expression. The heart, with its high NAD levels, is a metabolically demanding organ where NAD levels decrease in heart failure models, affecting myocardial bioenergetics and function. Therapeutic strategies targeting NAD homeostasis show promise in improving heart health.

Ferroptosis and cardiovascular disease: role of free radical-induced lipid peroxidation

Xin Chen et al.

Summary: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, with myocardial infarction caused by atherosclerosis being a leading cause of death in CVD. Ferroptosis, a newly identified form of regulated cell death characterized by iron-dependent accumulation of lipid hydroperoxides, appears to play a role in CVD, exhibiting distinct features from apoptosis, necrosis, and autophagy. The review summarized recent progress on ferroptosis in CVD and atherosclerosis, emphasizing the role of free radical lipid peroxidation (LPO) and discussing the evidence and challenges in this field.
