Current and future strategies for the treatment of chronic hepatitis C

Omar Alshuwaykh et al.

Summary: Chronic hepatitis C infection is a major cause of liver disease and hepatocellular carcinoma globally. While treatment has been successful in the past, challenges in diagnosis and treatment remain, making global elimination of hepatitis C problematic. Multiple populations are being targeted for care models and efforts for a vaccine continue.

Treatment failure with DAA therapy: Importance of resistance

Christoph Sarrazin

Summary: Viral resistance is a major factor in virological failure of patients with chronic HCV infection receiving DAAs treatment, with the importance varying based on DAA regimen and HCV genotype. First-line therapy with G/P or VEL/SOF may not require baseline resistance analysis, while VOX/VEL/SOF is the preferred second-line treatment option. Different patient subgroups may benefit from resistance testing to optimize therapy.

Factors associated with treatment failure of direct-acting antivirals for chronic hepatitis C: A real-world nationwide hepatitis C virus registry programme in Taiwan

Chi-Yi Chen et al.

Summary: The direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) are highly effective in treating Taiwanese HCV patients in the real-world setting, with an overall SVR12 rate of 98.3%. Maintaining DAA adherence and selecting highly efficacious regimens are keys to ensure treatment success.
