Whole-Genome Resequencing of Worldwide Wild and Domestic Sheep Elucidates Genetic Diversity, Introgression, and Agronomically Important Loci

Feng-Hua Lv et al.

Summary: This study provides a comprehensive genome resource for domestic sheep, wild ovine species, and local breeds, discovering numerous novel genetic variants and investigating their frequency differences between wild and domestic populations. The study also identifies selection targets related to morphological and agronomic traits and uncovers a potential causal variant for fleece fiber diameter. Additionally, the study reconstructs prehistoric migrations from the Near East to South and Southeast Asia.

Genetics of the phenotypic evolution in sheep: a molecular look at diversity-driving genes

Peter Kalds et al.

Summary: This article reviews the research on the sheep genome in the past few decades, discussing the genetic and genomic variations of phenotypic traits in sheep and advocating for their practical application in sheep breeding. It points out that further research is needed to fully understand the sheep genome, but the accumulated knowledge will help enhance sheep productivity and improve breeding programs in the face of future challenges.

Genome-wide analyses reveal population structure and identify candidate genes associated with tail fatness in local sheep from a semi-arid area

I Baazaoui et al.

Summary: This study highlights the importance of exploring and preserving the genetic make-up of local livestock breeds under a climate change perspective. The analysis of Tunisian sheep samples revealed recent introgression between BAR and QFO breeds, genetic differentiation in NDT samples possibly due to past introgression of European gene pools, and a significant signal on chromosome 13 associated with fat-tailed BAR animals. Genes under selection pressure related to lipid storage were identified in fat-tailed BAR animals.

Rab18 binds PLIN2 and ACSL3 to mediate lipid droplet dynamics

Yaqin Deng et al.

Summary: The study revealed that Rab18 plays a crucial role in oleic acid-induced lipid droplet accumulation in myoblast cells by interacting with PLIN2 and ACSL3 to regulate lipid droplet dynamics. Loss of Rab18 function leads to reduced triacylglycerol levels and fewer but larger lipid droplets, while overexpression of Rab18 results in elevated triacylglycerol content and an increased number of lipid droplets. Lipid droplet-associated Rab18 forms a complex with PLIN2 and ACSL3, demonstrating its critical role in lipid droplet accumulation and dynamics in myoblast cells.

Deletion of Nrip1 delays skin aging by reducing adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ADMSCs) senescence, and maintaining ADMSCs quiescence

Yu Hu et al.

Summary: Deletion of Nrip1 delays skin aging phenotypes, decreases proliferation of ADMSCs, prevents cell apoptosis, and suppresses adipogenesis. Knockout of Nrip1 also reduces cell senescence, maintains cell quiescence, and decreases expression of genes associated with senescence, inflammation, and growth factors.

Genome wide association study for the identification of genes associated with tail fat deposition in Chinese sheep breeds

Caiye Zhu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the genetic basis underlying phenotypic differences among Chinese indigenous sheep with different tail types. A genome-wide association study identified significant SNPs associated with tail-type traits and candidate genes including SPAG17, Tbx15, VRTN, NPC2, BMP2, and PDGFD. Further investigation revealed specific SNPs within BMP2 and PDGFD genes related to tail types in Altay and Tibetan populations.

GLIS1, a potential candidate gene affect fat deposition in sheep tail

Rongsong Luo et al.

Summary: This study identified candidate genes associated with fat deposition in sheep tails by conducting population genomics analysis on Mongolian sheep, Small Tail Han sheep, and DairyMeade through whole-genome sequencing. Among the identified genes, GLIS1 was found to play a critical role in fat deposition in sheep tails, especially through a nonsynonymous mutation in STH-MG.
