Carbon Metabolism and the ROS Scavenging System Participate in Nostoc flagelliforme's Adaptive Response to Dehydration Conditions through Protein Acetylation

Lingxia Wang et al.

Summary: Acetylation is an important protein post-translational modification that plays a key role in cellular processes. This study analyzed the acetylation of lysine in cyanobacteria under dehydration treatment and found increased starch accumulation. Integrative analysis showed overlap in terms of metabolism and identified proteins related to carbon metabolism and ROS scavenging as key components in the dehydration stress response.

A tRNA t6A modification system contributes to the sensitivity towards the toxin β-N-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA) in the cyanobacterium Anabaena sp. PCC 7120

Zi-Qian Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, the authors demonstrate that the system responsible for modifying ANN-decoding tRNAs is involved in the sensitivity of cyanobacteria to the environmental neurotoxin BMAA. The study also reveals that both BMAA and inactivation of the t(6)A biosynthesis pathway affect translational fidelity and ribosome assembly. BMAA-resistant mutants screening is an effective method for gaining insight into the toxic mechanisms of BMAA.

The Making of a Heterocyst in Cyanobacteria Annual Review of Microbiology

Xiaoli Zeng et al.

Summary: Heterocyst differentiation in cyanobacteria like Anabaena provides a unique model for prokaryotic developmental biology. Heterocysts, which are formed in response to nitrogen deprivation, play an altruistic role in providing fixed nitrogen for neighboring cells. The development of heterocysts follows a one-dimensional pattern formation, interacting with morphogens in a manner consistent with the Turing model.

A proteolytic pathway coordinates cell division and heterocyst differentiation in the cyanobacterium Anabaena sp. PCC 7120

Wei-Yue Xing et al.

Summary: In this study, a new negative regulator called PatU3 was identified in the prokaryote Anabaena, which regulates cell division and heterocyst development. The results showed that PatU3 is a specific substrate of the protease activity of HetF, and HetF controls cell division and heterocyst differentiation by controlling the inhibitory effects of PatU3.

Amino Acid Analog Induces Stress Response in Marine Synechococcus

Dana E. Michels et al.

Summary: Understanding cell-level metabolic trade-offs in phytoplankton is crucial for predicting the impact of environmental changes on marine ecosystems. The BONCAT technique shows potential for studying resource allocation in phytoplankton, but its application in marine environments is limited. The uptake of a modified amino acid by marine phytoplankton demonstrates the potential use of BONCAT, but the physiological response and limitations must be carefully considered when applying this technique to different marine taxa.

Role of a cryptic tRNA gene operon in survival under translational stress

Javier Santamaria-Gomez et al.

Summary: This study reveals the existence of long tRNA gene arrays in some bacteria, which are induced when the translation machinery is impaired, directly contributing to cell survival. The cellular response to this challenge involves a global reprogramming of the transcriptome in two phases.
