Polymeric biocompatible iron oxide nanoparticles labeled with peptides for imaging in ovarian cancer

Deepshikha Shahdeo et al.

Summary: Compared with other nanomaterials, surface-modified iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) are attractive for cancer therapy due to their low toxicity and long retention time. In this study, a harmless targeting strategy was developed using chitosan-coated IONPs functionalized with fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-labeled peptides (growth factor domain (GFD) and somatomedin B domain (SMB)) to target urokinase plasminogen activator receptor (uPAR) in ovarian cancer. The binding affinity between uPAR and peptides was investigated through in-silico docking studies. The biophysical characterizations of the nanoprobes were assessed using various techniques. The combination of IONPs/C/GFD+SMB showed efficient targeting of uPAR in the tumor microenvironment, making them potential molecular magnetic nanoprobe for cancer cell imaging and targeting.

Hemochromatosis classification: update and recommendations by the BIOIRON Society

Domenico Girelli et al.

Summary: Hemochromatosis is a genetically heterogenous disorder characterized by uncontrolled intestinal iron absorption leading to iron overload and potentially life-threatening complications. Recent research has identified mutations in at least 5 genes as the main cause of the disease, affecting hepcidin production or action.

Iron- and erythropoietin-resistant anemia in a spontaneous breast cancer mouse model

Summary: Anemia of cancer (AoC) is a poor prognostic indicator for cancer patients due to its multifactorial etiology and complex pathology. This study describes a new mouse model of AoC that may serve as a disease model to test therapeutic approaches for cancer patients with normal or corrected iron levels who do not respond to erythropoietin.

Sickle Cell Disease: A Review

Patricia L. Kavanagh et al.

Summary: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is an inherited disorder of hemoglobin, with approximately 300,000 infants born with SCD annually worldwide. SCD is characterized by the formation of long chains of hemoglobin, resulting in sickle-shaped red blood cells, multiorgan damage, and increased mortality. Approximately 100,000 individuals have SCD in the US, with an average life expectancy 20 years shorter than the general population.

Summary: Ring sideroblasts (RS) are erythroid precursors with abnormal perinuclear mitochondrial iron accumulation, associated with myeloid neoplasms MDS-RS and MDS/MPN-RS-T; SF3B1 mutations are common in these diseases; treatment options include luspatercept for anemia and consideration of aspirin therapy in MDS/MPN-RS-T.

Iron deficiency

Sant-Rayn Pasricha et al.

Summary: Iron deficiency is a major contributor to the global burden of disease, particularly affecting children, premenopausal women, and those in low-income and middle-income countries. Oral iron therapy is usually the first line of treatment, but high-dose oral iron supplementation and iron absorption during inflammation may be limited by hepcidin upregulation.

Summary: Macrophages play crucial roles in various tissues throughout the body, phagocytosing cellular debris and recycling red blood cells to promote tissue homeostasis. They exhibit a broad spectrum of functional activation states, responding to internal and external stimuli to maintain tissue equilibrium. Their fast adaptation to the environment helps ensure tissue homeostasis under physiological conditions.

Summary: Genetic disorders affecting proteins involved in maintaining iron balance can lead to Mendelian anemias, which are usually rare recessive diseases characterized by microcytic and hypochromic red blood cells.
