Role of Collagen Regulators in Cancer Treatment: A Comprehensive Review

Tanuja Angre et al.

Summary: Collagen plays a crucial role in tumor progression and its activity can be regulated through various signaling pathways, receptors, and genes. Other extracellular matrix components such as metalloproteinases, hyaluronic acid, and fibronectin can also regulate the activity of cancer cells. Hypoxia stimulates the expression of procollagen lysine, resulting in increased collagen fiber size and promoting cancer spread. The high collagen content in cancer cells leads to resistance to chemotherapy. Therefore, strategies to control collagen level and inhibitors are essential for the development of new chemotherapy drugs.
