Substitution of coke with pelletized biocarbon in the European and Chinese steel industries: An LCA analysis

Eid Gul et al.

Summary: According to the Financial Times, the steel industry emissions accounted for 7-9% of total greenhouse gases emissions worldwide in 2019, mainly due to the use of fossil coke and coal as fuels. Four solutions can be adopted to address this issue, including producing biocarbon as a substitute for traditional metallurgical coke and using it in the silicon and steel industry.

Numerical Simulation of Bottom-Blowing Stirring in Different Smelting Stages of Electric Arc Furnace Steelmaking

Hang Hu et al.

Summary: The numerical simulation study revealed that as the bottom-blowing gas flow rate decreased in different stages of the EAF steelmaking process, the average flow velocity of molten steel also decreased, indicating a weakening effect of bottom-blowing on the molten steel throughout the smelting process. The study provided a theoretical basis for the development of the bottom-blowing process.

Multi- objective optimization and life cycle assessment of a cascade system integrating LiBr/H2O absorption refrigeration with transcritical CO2 power cycle

Peizhi Yang et al.

Summary: An analysis of a cascade system combining absorption refrigeration and transcritical CO2 power cycle for low-grade waste heat recovery was conducted, with a focus on energy, economic, and environmental aspects. Life cycle assessment and a novel comprehensive index were used to evaluate environmental performance. A multi-objective optimization model was established to balance thermal efficiency, annual total cost, and environmental impact. The final optimal solution showed improvements in thermal efficiency and environmental performance at the cost of an increase in annual total cost.

A review on bath fluid flow stirring technologies in EAF steelmaking

Ling-zhi Yang et al.

Summary: Increasing contents and temperature homogenization via fluid flow stirring is an effective method of improving production quality and smelting efficiency in the contemporary electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking industry. The trend for different factories with bowl-shaped furnaces is to apply the bath fluidity enhancement technology. Improvements in the EAF steelmaking process focus on reducing energy consumption and tap-to-tap time, requiring an essential understanding of every phase in the EAF steelmaking process.
