COVID-19 Infection among Nursing Students in Spain: The Risk Perception, Perceived Risk Factors, Coping Style, Preventive Knowledge of the Disease and Sense of Coherence as Psychological Predictor Variables: A Cross Sectional Survey

Summary: Exploring the health beliefs of nursing students about COVID-19 can help identify their behaviors, attitudes, and knowledge related to contagion risk. A study was conducted among nursing students from 13 universities in Spain to analyze variables such as risk perception, perceived risk factors, coping style, sense of coherence, and knowledge of preventive measures. The findings showed that nursing students had a high perception of contagion risk, a high level of knowledge, and a coping style focused on the situation. Gender differences were found in coping styles, with women scoring higher in all categories. The regression analysis identified coping style (specifically, search for support) and perceived risk factors as predictors of COVID-19 infection among nursing students. It is important for nursing students to be aware of their health belief model, as a social support-based coping style may increase their risk of COVID-19 infection.
