Serum sirtuin-1 a potential marker in the diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis

Liming Tan et al.

Summary: The study explores the value of serum sirtuin-1 (SIRT1) in the diagnosis and evaluation of joint mobility in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The levels of various markers were detected in serum samples from RA patients, non-RA patients, and healthy controls. The results showed that SIRT1 can be used as a new serological marker for RA diagnosis, with significant correlation to RA joint mobility and potential reference value in RA differential diagnosis.

Dysfunction of Inflammatory Pathways and Their Relationship with Anti-Hypothalamic Autoantibodies in Patients with Anorexia Nervosa

Summary: This study reveals that there is an increased immune response and inflammatory state in patients with anorexia nervosa, which is correlated with the presence of autoantibodies for hypothalamic antigens. The study also suggests that the inflammatory state decreases with the duration of the disease.

Models of care for eating disorders: findings from a rapid review

Melissa J. Pehlivan et al.

Summary: The review summarizes current implementation research on models of care for eating disorders in developed healthcare systems, highlighting the importance of specialist care and stepped care models for optimal patient outcomes. Findings suggest the need for further research into alternatives to traditional inpatient care and the greater involvement of primary care clinicians to address system issues and patient-related barriers in ED treatment.

Anorexia nervosa and autoimmune comorbidities: A bidirectional route?

Maria M. Sirufo et al.

Summary: There is a reciprocal association between anorexia nervosa and autoimmune diseases based on shared immunopathological mechanisms. Factors such as the influence of gut microbiota, disrupted gut-brain communication, and disrupted T cell tolerance and autoantibodies may play important roles in the pathogenesis of anorexia nervosa.

Worldwide prevalence of DSM-5 eating disorders among young people

Yasmina Silen et al.

Summary: This review examines the prevalence of eating disorders among young people worldwide and finds a high prevalence among young women, with gender and sexual minorities at a higher risk. Similar high prevalences are observed in Eastern Europe, Asia, and Latin America. The incidence of eating disorders has also increased during the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting the urgent need for improved detection, management, and prevention methods.

Anti-hypothalamus autoantibodies in anorexia nervosa: a possible new mechanism in neuro-physiological derangement?

Andrea Escelsior et al.

Summary: The study found the presence of autoantibodies related to anorexia nervosa (AN) in the blood serum of AN patients. Additionally, the concentrations of ghrelin, pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC), and agouti-related peptide (AGRP) were significantly higher, while leptin concentrations were significantly lower in AN patients compared to the control group. However, the exact role of these antibodies in the body is still not clear and further research is needed.

Hypothalamic Actions of SIRT1 and SIRT6 on Energy Balance

Mar Quinones et al.

Summary: Sirtuins are NAD+ dependent deacetylases that play key roles in physiology, acting as energy sensors and regulating metabolism. Among them, SIRT1 and SIRT6 are crucial in the hypothalamus, where they can mitigate metabolic complications associated with obesity.

The Role of the Gut Microbiome, Immunity, and Neuroinflammation in the Pathophysiology of Eating Disorders

Michael J. Butler et al.

Summary: Alterations in the gut microbiome and immune system may play a role in maintaining and exacerbating eating behavior dysregulation in disorders like anorexia and bulimia, and could potentially serve as biomarkers for increased risk of developing these eating disorders. Research focuses on studying gut dysbiosis, peripheral inflammation, and neuroinflammation in each disorder, as well as exploring data from preclinical rodent models to better understand the biological mechanisms underlying eating disorders. This knowledge is crucial for developing novel and effective treatments for these often difficult-to-treat eating disorders.

Anorexia nervosa and juvenile lupus erythematosus in a 16-year-old female patient - common disease origin or random coincidence?

Lidia Hyla-Klekot et al.

Summary: Adolescence is a period in which eating disorders and juvenile systemic lupus erythematosus are typically diagnosed. The coexistence of both disorders may suggest a common pathophysiology and further investigation is needed. Affliction with one severe disease does not preclude the possibility of another different disease, therefore caution is required in reaching a final diagnosis in similar cases.
