Other markers of medullary thyroid cancer, not only calcitonin

Simona Censi et al.

Summary: Medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) is a rare neuroendocrine tumor originating from parafollicular C-cells. An early diagnosis is crucial for proper treatment. Currently, there is insufficient evidence to establish effective evaluation flowcharts for MTC involving alternative serum markers. Further studies are needed to shed more light on this challenge.

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) and cancer: new perspectives on an old relationship

R. Modica et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the relationship between environmental endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) and breast, prostate, testicle, ovary, and thyroid cancer, as well as evaluates their impact on public health. EDCs play a major role in cancer development, with some known EDCs considered carcinogenic. Effective prevention policies and increased public awareness are necessary to address this issue.

Preoperative serum inflammation-based scores in medullary thyroid cancer

Ana Abrantes Figueiredo et al.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed 75 patients with MTC who underwent surgery and evaluated the association between preoperative NLR, PLR, and SII with MTC clinicopathological features and the predictive value for lymph node and distant metastasis. The results showed that NLR, PLR, and SII were associated with aggressive MTC but did not predict lymph node or distant metastasis.

Metastatic medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC): disease course, treatment modalities and factors predisposing for drug resistance

Katerina Saltiki et al.

Summary: This study investigates the different clinical courses of MTC and finds that further therapeutic modalities are needed for patients with metastatic disease. The results show that familial MTC has a better disease course compared to sporadic MTC, and patients with SAEs during treatment also have a more favorable outcome.

Neutrophil to Lymphocyte Ratio: An Emerging Marker of the Relationships between the Immune System and Diseases

Agata Buonacera et al.

Summary: Evaluation of the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) as a marker of diseases has become a compelling field of research in the past decade. Although an exact cut-off value has not been determined, NLR is recognized as a marker of immune system homeostasis and is correlated with mortality in general population and specific disease subsets. Additionally, NLR has been considered in decision-making processes for COVID-19 pneumonia patients.

Neutrophil-to-Lymphocyte Ratio (NLR) Is a Promising Predictor of Mortality and Admission to Intensive Care Unit of COVID-19 Patients

Matteo Regolo et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the role of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) as a predictor of mortality and admission to the intensive care unit in COVID-19 patients. The findings showed that NLR is an independent predictor of mortality and a worse outcome in COVID-19 patients, and it may help identify high-risk individuals with COVID-19 infection at admission.

Summary: By using a multi-omics approach, this study reveals the important role of ATM-dependent signaling in gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumors and medullary thyroid carcinomas. It also identifies a set of circulating miRNAs that could be potential diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers.

Immunotherapy of Neuroendocrine Neoplasms: Any Role for the Chimeric Antigen Receptor T Cells?

Giuseppe Fanciulli et al.

Summary: Neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) are a group of tumors with diverse clinical presentations and prognoses. Surgery is the most effective treatment, but NENs are often diagnosed at a locally advanced or metastatic stage, requiring additional therapeutic approaches. Chimeric antigen receptor T cells (CAR-T) have shown promising therapeutic effects in NENs, with ongoing clinical trials set to define their role in aggressive cases.

Neutrophil-to-Lymphocyte Ratio Predicts Early Neurological Deterioration after Endovascular Treatment in Patients with Ischemic Stroke

Simona Lattanzi et al.

Summary: The worsening of neurological status shortly after acute ischemic stroke (AIS) is a serious problem, and inflammation plays a key role in stroke pathology. A study found that the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) at admission in AIS patients undergoing endovascular treatment (EVT) is associated with early neurological deterioration (END). Higher NLR values predicted a higher risk of END.

Calcitonin: current concepts and differential diagnosis

Andreas Kiriakopoulos et al.

Summary: Calcitonin is a hormone produced by the parafollicular cells of the thyroid gland that acts through the calcitonin receptor. In clinical practice, it is used for the diagnosis and follow-up of medullary thyroid carcinoma. Elevated basal calcitonin levels can indicate the presence of this type of carcinoma. This review provides current information on the synthesis and physiology of calcitonin, as well as its differential diagnosis in various clinical situations.

Immunological Roles of NLR in Allergic Diseases and Its Underlying Mechanisms

Miranda Sin-Man Tsang et al.

Summary: Over the past 20 years, advancements in understanding the immunological roles of pathogen recognition in innate immunity have shed light on the potential of NLR sensors in treating allergic diseases. Discoveries on NLR sensors in allergic diseases suggest that the pathogenesis of allergies may extend beyond the adaptive immune response, and research on therapy targeting NLR in murine models holds promise for the treatment of allergies in humans.
