Auditory and verbal skills development post-cochlear implantation in Mandarin children with auditory neuropathy: a follow-up study

Jiaying Hu et al.

Summary: This study compared the effectiveness of cochlear implants in children with auditory neuropathy compared to typically developing children. The results showed significant improvements in auditory perception within the first 3 months and gradual improvement in verbal skills after 9 months of cochlear implant use. However, over time, the differences in auditory and verbal skills between the two groups increased.

Prevalence, behavioural, and management outcomes of infants with auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder

Jason Smalley et al.

Summary: This study provides an overview of electrophysiological and behavioural outcomes from a large UK centres data set on children diagnosed with auditory neuropathy (ANSD) between 2002 and March 2018. The results show that certain patterns of electrophysiological results are closely related to later behavioral outcomes, indicating a need for closer attention to the treatment and management of these children.

Prevalence, risk factors, and audiological characteristics of auditory neuropathy

Ali A. Almishaal et al.

Summary: This study determined the prevalence of ANSD in Saudi Arabian children with severe to profound hearing loss to be 9.85%. Major risk factors included family history, consanguinity, hyperbilirubinemia, and low birth weight. Hearing outcomes significantly improved with cochlear implantation compared to hearing aid use.

Diagnosis of Auditory Neuropathy Spectrum Disorder in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Population

Chengetai Mahomva et al.

Summary: The study aimed to determine the incidence and risk factors of auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder (ANSD) among the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) population from 2009 to 2018. Despite a significant increase in NICU admissions and total ANSD diagnoses, the incidence of ANSD in the NICU population remained stable. Children with ANSD were found to have a stronger association with the use of furosemide and mechanical ventilation compared to all NICU admissions.

Cochlear implantation in auditory neuropathy spectrum disorders: role of transtympanic electrically evoked auditory brainstem responses and serial neural response telemetry

S. N. Dutt et al.

Summary: This study highlights the significance of pre-operative transtympanic electrically evoked auditory brainstem responses and post-operative neural response telemetry in evaluating cochlear implant outcomes for auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder patients. Patients with better waveforms on transtympanic electrically evoked auditory brainstem response testing showed superior performance after one year of implant use. Improvements in neural response telemetry and electrically evoked auditory brainstem responses over time suggest that electrical stimulation is beneficial in this patient population.

Central auditory maturation and behavioral outcomes after cochlear implantation in prelingual auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder related to OTOF variants (DFNB9): Lessons from pilot study

Sang-Yeon Lee et al.

Summary: The P1 component of CAEP serves as a biomarker for CI outcomes in children with ANSD. Early intervention before the age of 2.5 years and timely CI usage are crucial for age-appropriate cortical maturation. However, heterogeneity in ANSD may require a focused evaluation on OTOF variants to ensure optimal language development.

A Rare Case of Perrault Syndrome with Auditory Neuropathy Spectrum Disorder: Cochlear Implantation Treatment and Literature Review

Francesca Forli et al.

Summary: Perrault syndrome is a rare genetic disorder characterized by ovarian failure and sensorineural hearing loss. This paper describes a case of PRLTS3 with auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder, a first reported case of its kind, and discusses potential mitochondrial dysfunction as a result of pathogenic mutations in CLPP.
