Which intervention is more effective in improving sarcopenia in older adults? A systematic review with meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

Seong-Hi Park et al.

Summary: This systematic review found that combined intervention was more effective than exercise or nutrition alone in improving skeletal muscle index, handgrip, and gait speed in older adults. When comparing different interventions, the combined intervention group showed significant improvements in all indicators. Therefore, exercise is recommended for improving physical performance in older adults.

Summary: Muscle strength is associated with aging. While the relationship between adherence to Mediterranean diet and muscle strength in older adults remains inconclusive, this study found that those with higher adherence to Mediterranean diet had a lower risk of probable sarcopenia.

The effect of different exercise programs on sarcopenia criteria in older people: A systematic review of systematic reviews with meta-analysis

Luis Fernando Ferreira et al.

Summary: This study compared the effects of different modalities of physical exercises on the sarcopenia diagnostic criteria in older people. The results showed that resistance training had positive effects on strength and skeletal muscle mass, while mixed modalities of exercise had positive effects on physical performance. However, there were methodological limitations in the included studies, and more research is needed to confirm the findings.

Summary: Sarcopenia, an age-related neuromuscular disease, increases the risk for negative events. Resistance training is considered the best approach to counteract sarcopenia, but specific characteristics of older adults with sarcopenia need more consideration.

Performance on sit-to-stand tests in relation to measures of functional fitness and sarcopenia diagnosis in community-dwelling older adults

Xianyang Sherman Yee et al.

Summary: This study found that STS tests better represent muscle physical performance rather than muscle strength. Different subsets of population with possible sarcopenia are identified depending on the test used. The lack of association of STS performance with muscle mass results in a lower prevalence of confirmed sarcopenia compared with grip strength, but may better reflect changes in muscle quality.

Associated Factors of Sarcopenia in Community-Dwelling Older Adults: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Summary: This study identified numerous sociodemographic, behavioral, and disease-related factors associated with sarcopenia in older adults living in the community. The findings provide valuable evidence for early identification of high-risk individuals and the development of interventions to prevent sarcopenia in this population.

Effects of different exercise training modes on muscle strength and physical performance in older people with sarcopenia: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Linqian Lu et al.

Summary: Studies on exercise training for older people with sarcopenia show that resistance training and mixed training can significantly improve muscle strength and gait speed, while whole body vibration training has no significant effect. All three training modes can improve Timed Up and Go times, but do not have a significant impact on Chair Stand times.

Is the grip force measurement suitable for assessing overall strength regardless of age and gender?

Danuta Roman-Liu et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the relationship between handgrip force and moments of force in upper and lower limb joints, taking into account age and sex. The findings showed that handgrip can be a better predictor of strength of limbs muscle groups after scaling with corresponding models, with the best approximation for knee strength. The study also revealed differences in strength related to age are higher in lower limbs, especially for knee flexion and extension.

Association between the handgrip strength and the isokinetic muscle function of the elbow and the knee in asymptomatic adults

Thatiane Lopes Valentim Di Paschoale Ostolin et al.

Summary: A study of 780 asymptomatic adults found strong cross-sectional correlations between handgrip strength and knee and elbow muscle function that weakened in prospective analysis. While handgrip strength could predict muscle function, it could not fully explain the variability, suggesting the need for specific measures in assessing muscle function in epidemiological studies.
