Inorganic quantum dots-anammox consortia hybrid for stable nitrogen elimination under high-intensity solar-simulated irradiation

Zhi-Qi Ren et al.

Summary: In this study, a inorganic nanoparticle-microbe hybrid containing selenium-doped carbon quantum dots (Se-CQDs) was successfully fabricated, and it was found that the hybrid could enhance the nitrogen removal performance of anaerobic ammonia oxidation (anammox) bacteria under light irradiation. The results showed that Se-CQDs played a significant role in protecting the bacteria from photooxidative damage by scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS) and improving cellular redox homeostasis and antioxidase activity.

Acetogenic bacteria utilize light-driven electrons as an energy source for autotrophic growth

Sangrak Jin et al.

Summary: A hybrid system has been developed that can convert CO2 into acetate using light-induced electrons without the need for additional energy sources. Genes encoding metal ion or flavin-binding proteins were up-regulated under CdS-driven autotrophic conditions, along with activation of genes related to the WL pathway and energy conservation system, increasing the CO2 fixation rate under light exposure. The results demonstrate the potential to improve the efficiency of artificial photosynthesis systems based on acetogenic bacteria integrated with photoresponsive nanoparticles.
