Impact of microplastics on the intestinal microbiota: A systematic review of preclinical evidence

Thaiany Goulart De Souza-Silva et al.

Summary: This review systematically examines the effects of microplastics on the intestinal microbiota and morphofunctional changes of the intestinal mucosa in vivo. The findings suggest that microplastics may contribute to intestinal dysbiosis and structural changes in the intestinal mucosa.

Single-use plastics: Production, usage, disposal, and adverse impacts

Yuan Chen et al.

Summary: The increasing production and use of single-use plastics are causing pollution, wasting resources, and posing threats to plants, animals, and marine ecosystems. There is a growing push to minimize the use of single-use plastics, with regulatory tools and voluntary actions being suggested to reduce waste.

Determination of formaldehyde and acetaldehyde levels in poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) bottled mineral water using a simple and rapid analytical method

Yutaka Abe et al.

Summary: A simple and rapid analytical method was developed for the determination of formaldehyde (FA) and acetaldehyde (AA) contents in water. The study showed that the concentrations of FA and AA in PET-bottled mineral water on the Japanese market have not changed significantly over the last decade.

Microplastics in drinking water? Present state of knowledge and open questions

Barbara E. Ossmann

Summary: Research studies have shown that both bottled and tap water may contain microscopic plastic pieces, but reported amounts are difficult to compare due to differences in analytical techniques. Care should be taken when making projections on human intake of microplastics via food, as conclusions about major intake pathways are not yet justified. More research and harmonized methods are needed to reliably determine microplastics in drinking water and complex food products.

Micro-abrasive glass surface for producing microplastics for biological tests

Yoshitaka Nakanishi et al.

Summary: This study aimed to develop a method for producing microplastics for biological tests with guaranteed morphology and constituents. Different shapes of microplastics were obtained using different types of pins made of PET, PP, and PVC. The modal diameter ranges of PET, PP, and PVC microplastics were discussed in relation to the abrasive-glass surface used.

Benchmark of 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing using Japanese gut microbiome data from the V1-V2 and V3-V4 primer sets

Shoichiro Kameoka et al.

Summary: The study compared 192 Japanese volunteers' fecal 16S analysis data using modified V1-V2 and standard V3-V4 primers. Results showed that the bacterial composition derived from the V34 region might differ from the actual abundance, suggesting that the modified V12 primer set is more desirable for analyzing the Japanese gut microbiota.

New human-associated species of the family Atopobiaceae and proposal to reclassify members of the genus Olsenella

Rita Zgheib et al.

Summary: Five novel bacterial strains isolated from human specimens were reclassified using a polyphasic taxono-genomic strategy, resulting in the proposal of new species and genera names. This study highlights the importance of genomic analysis in better classifying bacterial strains and understanding microbial diversity.
