Enhancement of oxygen vacancy sites of La2-xMxCe2O7-δ (M = Ca, Ba, Sr) catalyst for the low temperature oxidative coupling of Methane: A combined DFT and experimental study

Rohan Singh Pal et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of different alkaline earth metals doped La2-xMxCe2O7-delta (M = Ca, Sr, Ba and x = 0.30) catalysts prepared by one-step hydrothermal method for the low-temperature methane oxidative coupling (OCM) to olefins. The presence of a disordered cubic fluorite phase of synthesized catalysts was detected by powder XRD and Raman analysis. Surface analysis by XPS and Raman showed the presence of oxygen vacancy sites, which are responsible for the formation of electrophilic superoxide O-2(-) species in the presence of molecular oxygen. The catalytic activity of different catalysts for the OCM reactions follows the order: La1.7Ca0.3Ce2O7-delta > La1(.7)Sr(0.3)Ce(2)O(7-delta) > La1.7Ba0.3Ce2O7-delta > La2Ce2O7. The reactivity order follows the same trend as the amount of basic sites and reactive oxygen species. According to this study, the best catalyst is La1.7Ca0.3Ce2O7-delta, which gives the highest C-2 yield and C-2 selectivity of 23.6% and 78.8%, respectively, at 650 degrees C. DFT studies revealed that substitution of La by Ca in the La2Ce2O7 catalyst significantly reduces the oxygen vacancy formation energy by about 100 kJ/mol compared to the undoped LaCe-oxide. We believe that the superior activity of La1.7Ca0.3Ce2O7-delta catalyst is attributed to the higher amount of basicity and electrophilic oxygen content, which are the governing factors in OCM for CH4 conversion and C-2 product selectivity as well.

Solvent-free selective oxidation of cyclohexane to KA oil in air over CoWO4@W18O49 catalyst

Sonu Bhandari et al.

Summary: The challenge for heterogeneous catalysis is to develop robust catalysts that can activate molecular oxygen from air and selectively oxidize cyclohexane without producing unwanted by-products or leaching metal. In this study, we synthesized a nanosized CoWO4@W18O49 catalyst with oxygen vacancy sites, which achieved-24% cyclohexane conversion with-93% KA oil selectivity under solvent-free conditions. DFT studies showed that the CoWO4@W18O49 surface required -15.8 kJ/mol of energy for oxygen vacancy generation, significantly lower than the CoWO4 (111) and W18O49 (010) surfaces. The exceptional catalytic activity of CoWO4@W18O49 is attributed to the active CoWO4 and W18O49 interfaces, which have redox sites and abundant vacancies of oxygen.

Summary: An electrochemical method for converting primary alcohols to carboxylic acids has been developed. This method can be used with various alcohols containing nitrogen-containing heterocycles in both continuous flow and batch modes. The use of a heterogeneous NiOOH electron-proton transfer mediator eliminates the need for homogeneous catalysts, reducing unit operations and process mass intensity.
