Highly Durable Fluorinated High Oxygen Permeability Ionomers for Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells

Natalia Macauley et al.

Summary: In order to make proton exchange membrane fuel cells cost-competitive in vehicle applications, the Pt content in the catalyst layers needs to be reduced. This paper presents novel ionomers with significantly higher oxygen permeability than traditional materials. By optimizing the composition and quality of the materials, fuel cell performance is improved and can exceed the durability targets set by the U.S. Department of Energy.

The role of oxygen-permeable ionomer for polymer electrolyte fuel cells

Ryosuke Jinnouchi et al.

Summary: This study reports the improvement of performance in polymer electrolyte fuel cells by incorporating a ring-structured backbone matrix into ionomers in the cathode catalyst layers. High power density and catalytic activity are achieved through the high oxygen solubility of the ionomer, promoting oxygen transport and reactions. The molecular design of the ionomer enhances the oxygen reduction reaction activity and mitigates catalyst poisoning, ultimately benefiting the overall performance of the fuel cells.
