Population Structure and Genetic Diversity of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides on Citrus in China

Bei Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, the genetic structure and diversity of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, the dominant species causing citrus anthracnose, were analyzed using the Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) gene. A total of 19 GAPDH haplotypes were identified, with the main haplotype (haplotype 5) distributed widely among isolates from different Citrus species and locations. The genetic differentiation index (Fst) revealed significant genetic differentiation between populations from different regions and host species. The results suggest that genetic differentiation in C. gloeosporioides is mainly influenced by gene mutation, recombination, or migration within native populations rather than natural selection caused by geography or host variety.

Genetic Analysis of Colletotrichum siamense Populations from Different Hosts and Counties in Hainan, China, Using Microsatellite Markers

Xueren Cao et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the genotypes of 112 isolates of Colletotrichum siamense and found significant genetic differentiation among three clusters, regardless of host, location, and year. This suggests that C. siamense infecting rubber tree, areca palm, and coffee in Hainan can be considered as one disease and should be controlled simultaneously.

Natural Flora Is Indiscriminately Hosting High Loads of Generalist Fungal Pathogen Colletotrichum gloeosporioides Complex over Forest Niches, Vegetation Strata and Elevation Gradient

Pauline Dentika et al.

Summary: The study investigated the potential of natural vegetation to host a widespread pathogenic group of fungi called Colletotrichum gloeosporioides species complex. Stratified sampling in different forest environments and natural vegetation strata revealed that the fungi complex was broadly distributed in the wild flora, with some variation in prevalence, possibly due to fungal growth conditions. The results also indicated that different vegetation strata may have varying disease effects on cultivated crops, suggesting the need for considering the aggressiveness of strains in different areas.

The relationship between pathogen life-history traits and metapopulation dynamics

Laura J. A. an Dijk et al.

Summary: Plant pathogen traits, such as transmission mode and overwintering strategy, have significant effects on disease dynamics. Combining experimental assays, theory and field surveys, this study shows that pathogen life-history traits can predict pathogen metapopulation dynamics. Fungal pathogens infecting new plants via spores had higher patch occupancies and colonization rates compared to pathogens causing systemic infections and overwintering in rhizomes. Host patch size was positively related to patch occupancy and colonization rates for all pathogens.

Dynamics of Pathogenic Fungi in Field Hedges: Vegetation Cover Is Differentially Impacted by Weather

Pauline Dentika et al.

Summary: Landscape effects can both impede and increase spore dispersal and disease risk for crops. This study investigated the prevalence of a pathogenic fungus on guava tree leaves, identifying factors such as leaf height and age that impact infection rates. The study also found evidence of different disease dynamics based on individual tree contaminations.

Wind-flow dynamics and spore-like particle dispersal over agroforestry systems: Impact of the tree density distribution

Sylvain Dupont et al.

Summary: Agroforestry systems combining trees with crops have gained interest for their environmental benefits. This study analyzes the wind dynamics within these systems and reveals the presence of two inflection points that control turbulent exchanges. The presence of trees has different effects on particle dispersion depending on size and wind intensity.

Investigating species boundaries in Colletotrichum

Chitrabhanu S. Bhunjun et al.

Summary: This study utilized multiple molecular approaches to establish species boundaries in Colletotrichum, finding that the ITS region can resolve species complex level issues and that GAPDH and TUB2 markers are the most informative. The introduction of a new species complex was based on congruent results from different molecular approaches. Coalescent methods and multi-locus phylogeny are crucial for establishing species boundaries in Colletotrichum.

Weeds as Pathogen Hosts and Disease Risk for Crops in the Wake of a Reduced Use of Herbicides: Evidence from Yam (Dioscorea alata) Fields and Colletotrichum Pathogens in the Tropics

Pauline Dentika et al.

Summary: The shift towards sustainable agriculture requires rethinking cropping systems to reduce reliance on chemicals and intensive practices, with weed management being a key component. This study highlights the potential role of weeds as hosts for pathogenic fungi, impacting disease risks in crops, but also suggests the possibility of controlling pathogens through targeted weed management.
