Pneumocystis spp. in Pigs: A Longitudinal Quantitative Study and Co-Infection Assessment in Austrian Farms

Barbara Blasi et al.

Summary: While Pneumocystis has been widely studied in humans, its epidemiology and association with pulmonary diseases in pigs have been rarely reported. This study longitudinally quantified the presence of Pneumocystis carinii f. sp. suis and other pulmonary pathogens in pigs from Austrian farms. The results revealed a complex co-infection history involving Pneumocystis and other pathogens, suggesting the importance of the fungus in respiratory diseases in pigs.

Pneumocystis Colonization in Dogs Is as in Humans

Patrizia Danesi et al.

Summary: Pneumocystis, an atypical fungus found in the pulmonary parenchyma of mammals, including humans and dogs, was detected in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid of 9% of dogs with respiratory distress and/or chronic cough. This suggests that Pneumocystis might play a role as a co-pathogen in some dogs with lower respiratory disease.

Acute interstitial pneumonia in foals: A severe, multifactorial syndrome with lung tissue recovery in surviving foals

Sophia Punsmann et al.

Summary: Acute interstitial pneumonia in foals is a complex disease with a multifactorial etiology. Recovery from acute interstitial pneumonia in foals appears to result in complete regeneration of the lungs without permanent changes. The study highlights the presence of various bacterial pathogens, viral infections, and Pneumocystis carinii in affected foals.

X-linked CD40 ligand deficiency in a 1-year-old male Shih Tzu with secondary Pneumocystis pneumonia

Kristen Merrill et al.

Summary: A young intact male Shih Tzu dog was diagnosed with severe Pneumocystis pneumonia and secondary pulmonary hypertension. The disease was successfully treated with a combination of medications. Immunodiagnostic testing and genetic sequencing revealed an X-linked CD40 ligand deficiency as an underlying cause.

Pneumocystis jirovecii: a review with a focus on prevention and treatment

R. Benson Weyant et al.

Summary: Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia is an opportunistic fungal infection that commonly affects immunocompromised hosts, with first-line treatment and prophylaxis being TMP-SMX. Alternative therapies like dapsone may be considered in cases of intolerance or allergy. The use of corticosteroids in HIV patients has shown a mortality benefit.

Revisiting the Pneumocystis host specificity paradigm and transmission ecology in wild Southeast Asian rodents

Alice Latinne et al.

Summary: The study on Pneumocystis fungi infecting wild rodents revealed a broader host specificity beyond a single species or genus, indicating potential infection across higher taxonomic levels. In Southeast Asia, the probability of Pneumocystis infection in rodents is positively correlated with environmental variables reflecting habitat fragmentation and landscape patchiness. Certain rodents belonging to Rattus, Sundamys, and Bandicota genera act as bridge hosts for Pneumocystis spreading in heterogeneous habitats.
