Dual inoculation of dark septate endophytes and Trichoderma viride drives plant performance and rhizosphere microbiome adaptations of Astragalus mongholicus to drought

Chao He et al.

Summary: The rhizosphere microbiome changes its composition in response to water scarcity and can help mitigate drought stress in plants. In this study, inoculation with dark septate endophytes (DSE) and Trichoderma viride positively affected plant growth in dry conditions. The effects of dual inoculation on bacterial community were greater than those on fungal community, and the combination of P. putaminum and T. viride had a stronger impact on the microbiome under drought stress.

Shuo Jiao et al.

Summary: This study found that core microbiota are crucial for maintaining the functional stability of soil microbiomes, especially in restored ecosystems. Core taxa within soil networks with similar ecological preferences play a significant role in functional stability. Reforestation was shown to decrease functional stability in soil microbiomes, with variations seen along the vertical soil profile.

Effects of Trichoderma asperellum 6S-2 on Apple Tree Growth and Replanted Soil Microbial Environment

Haiyan Wang et al.

Summary: The fungal fertilizer made from Trichoderma asperellum strain 6S-2 has biocontrol effects and growth-promoting properties for the prevention of apple replant disease (ARD). The application of 6S-2 fertilizer not only promotes the growth of Malus hupehensis Rehd seedlings and young apple trees, but also changes the soil microbial community structure. It increases the abundance of beneficial bacteria such as Bacillus and Streptomyces, decreases the abundance of pathogens such as Fusarium and Cryptococcus. Furthermore, the application of 6S-2 fertilizer significantly increases the bacteria/fungi ratio and soil enzyme activities. The relative contents of certain compounds in the root exudates of M. hupehensis Rehd treated with 6S-2 fertilizer are positively correlated with the abundance of Trichoderma, while other compounds are positively correlated with the abundance of Fusarium. Additionally, the levels of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, organic matter, and pH in the rhizosphere soil are significantly related to changes in the microbial community structure.

Bacterial Mitigation of Drought Stress in Plants: Current Perspectives and Future Challenges

Divjot Kour et al.

Summary: Climate change is leading to abiotic stress conditions, with drought being the most destructive stress affecting crop production and global food security. Plant-microbe interactions have been explored as a way to enhance plant adaptability to drought stress. Stress-adaptive microbes have been identified, which help plants cope with drought and promote growth through various mechanisms. These stress-adaptive plant growth promoting microbes are considered promising candidates for alleviating drought stress and providing maximum benefits to plants.

Best of both worlds: hybrids of two commercially important pines (Pinus contorta x Pinus banksiana) combine increased growth potential and high drought tolerance

Simon W. Bockstette et al.

Summary: Studies show that naturally occurring lodgepole pine x jack pine hybrids may be more drought-resistant than pure lodgepole pine. In a greenhouse experiment in northwest Alberta, hybrid pines grew significantly faster than lodgepole pine under well-watered conditions while retaining high tolerance to prolonged drought. This suggests that the deployment of hybrid lodgepole pine could be a strategy for promoting adaptation to hotter and drier future climates.
