Neoascotaiwania aquatica sp. nov. from a freshwater habitat in Yunnan Province, China

Lin Yang et al.

Summary: During an investigation of freshwater fungi from the Greater Mekong Subregion, a Bactrodesmium-like taxon was collected from a freshwater habitat in Yunnan Province, China. The new isolate, named Neoascotaiwania aquatica, was placed in the genus Neoascotaiwania within Savoryellaceae based on phylogenetic analysis of combined sequence data. The new taxon is distinguished from other Neoascotaiwania species by its unique features of conidiophores and conidia.

Bambusicolous Fungi in Pleosporales: Introducing Four Novel Taxa and a New Habitat Record for Anastomitrabeculia didymospora

Rungtiwa Phookamsak et al.

Summary: Several saprobic fungi were collected and preliminarily identified during a survey of bambusicolous fungi in northern Thailand and southwestern China. Multigene phylogenetic analyses confirmed the presence of four new taxa belonging to different families. In addition, a fungus previously unrecorded in terrestrial habitats was reported for the first time.

Morpho-Phylogenetic Evidence Reveals Novel Pleosporalean Taxa from Sichuan Province, China

Xian-Dong Yu et al.

Summary: During the investigation of microfungi from decaying wood in Sichuan Province, several novel fungal taxa of asexual and sexual morphs related to Pleosporales were discovered. Phylogenetic analyses based on gene sequences suggested that these new taxa were distributed in five families and justified the establishment of six new taxa. Among them, Neoangustimassarina was introduced as the second sexual morph genus in Amorosiaceae, and Bambusicola guttulata, O. sichuanensis and P. bambusicola contributed to the diversity of bambusicolous fungi. Detailed descriptions and notes for each new taxon, as well as a brief note for each family, were provided, along with a discussion on the potential richness of fungal diversity in Sichuan Province.

Morpho-Phylogenetic Evidence Reveals New Species of Fuscosporellaceae and Savoryellaceae from Freshwater Habitats in Guizhou Province, China

Hong-Zhi Du et al.

Summary: A survey of freshwater fungi in Guizhou Province, China, identified six new species belonging to Fuscosporellaceae and Savoryellaceae. The new taxa were characterized based on morphology, phylogenetic analysis, and culture characteristics. Detailed descriptions and illustrations were provided for each new species, and the first report of Fuscosporella species in China was made.

Reflections on Canalisporium, with descriptions of new species and records from Taiwan

Teik-Khiang Goh et al.

Summary: Multiple Canalisporium species collected from freshwater habitats in Taiwan, including new species and records, were described and identified based on nuclear rDNA sequences. Additionally, a division of Canalisporium species into two major groups based on conidial morphology was discussed.

Why morphology matters: the negative consequences of hasty descriptions of putative novelties in asexual ascomycetes

Ondrej Koukol et al.

Summary: Recent progress in fungal diversity discovery has largely relied on mycological surveys and DNA sequencing data analysis, which have led to an increase in new species descriptions. However, this rapid pace has resulted in oversight of previously documented species, highlighting the importance of morphology in accurate taxonomic classification.
