High-throughput sequencing view on the magnitude of global fungal diversity

Petr Baldrian et al.

Summary: High-throughput DNA sequencing has revolutionized biodiversity research in mycology, with over 200 studies generating 250 million sequences of the mycological marker ITS2. The total estimated extant fungal diversity is 6.28 million taxa, with Ascomycota and Basidiomycota dominating. Soil and litter have the highest alpha diversity of fungi, while lichens and plant tissues have the highest proportion of unknown species.

Core taxa and photobiont-microbial interaction within the lichen Heterodermia obscurata (Physcsiaceae, Heterodermia)

Haiyan Xu et al.

Summary: The dual nature of fungal-algal lichen symbioses is extended by other microbial associations. Lichens are successful holobionts composed of complex and multiple species, and the specific interactions between these microbes contribute to their health and growth. This study investigated the diversity and community composition of fungi, bacteria, and microalgae within a specific lichen species. The results showed that endophytic bacteria had greater diversity than fungi and microalgae, and different alga species were associated with shifts in the composition and function of endolichenic bacteria and fungi, suggesting that alga diversity plays a role in the taxonomical and functional differences of microbiomes within lichens.

Diversity of endophytic bacterial and fungal microbiota associated with the medicinal lichen Usnea longissima at high altitudes

Qi Wang et al.

Summary: This study focused on the investigation of bacterial and fungal endophytes in the medicinal lichen Usnea longissima. The results revealed a rich diversity of bacteria and fungi in U. longissima collected at different altitudes. The bacterial community was mainly composed of Alphaproteobacteria, Betaproteobacteria, Clostridia, Acidobacteria, and Bacilli, while the fungal community mainly consisted of Ascomycota, Basidiomycota, and unidentified phyla. Sequences related to lactic acid bacteria and budding yeast were detected, and the presence of harmful bacteria was also discussed.

Characterization of Bacterial and Fungal Communities Reveals Novel Consortia in Tropical Oligotrophic Peatlands

Elise S. Morrison et al.

Summary: The microbial communities in tropical peatlands are crucial for global biogeochemical cycles, and their composition and potential interactions vary along phosphorus gradients. Low-phosphorus conditions in peatlands are characterized by unique fungal and bacterial families, with the presence of a syntrophic-methanogenic consortium in low-phosphorus bacterial networks. Further investigation into active microbial communities and gas exchange processes will provide insight into biogeochemical cycling within these important ecosystems.

Dlhawksworthia flavoparmeliae sp. nov., a new endolichenic fungus in Phaeosphaeriaceae

Hong-Li Si et al.

Summary: The genus Dlhawksworthia currently consists of three species, none of which had been previously recorded in China. Through surveys in various regions of China, a new species from this genus, named Dlhawksworthia flavoparmeliae sp. nov., was isolated from lichens for the first time in China and globally. This discovery highlights a previously unknown ecological role of Dlhawksworthia species in lichens.

Unravelling unexplored diversity of cercosporoid fungi (Mycosphaerellaceae, Mycosphaerellales, Ascomycota) in tropical Africa

Yalemwork Meswaet et al.

Summary: Cercosporoid fungi are one of the largest groups of hyphomycetes causing diseases in economically important plants and wild plants. Despite over 6000 known species, understanding of this group is still incomplete, especially in tropical regions. This study identified and described 18 species of cercosporoid fungi collected on Fabaceae host plants in Benin using DNA sequence data and morphological characteristics.
