Antifungal Properties of Chemically Defined Propolis from Various Geographical Regions

Marcin Ozarowski et al.

Summary: This review summarizes recent studies on the antifungal activity of chemically defined propolis extracts, revealing that propolis extracts display a wide range of activity against pathogenic Candida strains and risky molds, although the strength of this activity varies. It also discusses factors influencing the chemical composition of propolis, mechanisms of antifungal activity, and research trends in developing new therapies and assessing drug interactions.

Antifungal Resistance in Clinical Isolates of Candida glabrata in Ibero-America

Erick Martinez-Herrera et al.

Summary: There is variability in the rates of resistance to antifungal agents in Candida glabrata in different regions worldwide. Limited data are available on the antifungal resistance in C. glabrata in Ibero-America. A systematic review was conducted to determine the antifungal resistance in C. glabrata in this region over the last five years. The use of azoles and echinocandins varied among different countries. The limited information emphasizes the need for species identification and antifungal susceptibility tests to prevent the development of antifungal resistance.

Emerging Antifungal Targets and Strategies

Marija Ivanov et al.

Summary: Despite extensive research on antifungal drug discovery, fungal infections continue to pose a significant healthcare burden. The current antifungal options are limited in their efficacy and safety, calling for the development of novel antifungals. As our understanding of fungal physiology and infection mechanisms advances, there is an opportunity to utilize this knowledge for the development of new generations of antifungals.

Allergic Inflammation: Effect of Propolis and Its Flavonoids

Nada Orsolic

Summary: The incidence of allergic diseases is increasing worldwide. Natural products, such as propolis, rich in flavonoids, have been used in the prevention and treatment of allergy and related complications. Flavonoids have anti-allergic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, and wound healing activities, and can affect the interactions between microbes and the immune system in response to allergens.

Candida glabrata Antifungal Resistance and Virulence Factors, a Perfect Pathogenic Combination

Maria Guadalupe Frias-De-Leon et al.

Summary: In recent years, there has been a progressive increase in invasive fungal infections caused by Candida glabrata. Drug resistance and virulence factors are important research areas, with different mechanisms of drug resistance found for the C. glabrata complex depending on geographical regions. This complex possesses a perfect pathogenetic combination for invading immunocompromised hosts.

A Specific Mixture of Propolis and Carnosic Acid Triggers a Strong Fungicidal Action against Cryptococcus neoformans

Alejandra Arguelles et al.

Summary: The study found that a certain propolis extract from China displayed cytotoxic activity against Cryptococcus neoformans, and when combined with carnosic acid, it exhibited a stronger fungicidal effect. Furthermore, this combination also showed inhibitory effects on the metabolic activity of sessile cells forming biofilms.
