Landscape Anthropization Affects Mosquito Diversity in a Deciduous Forest in Southeastern Mexico

Maggi Janelly Barrientos-Roldan et al.

Summary: The study found that human activities can have both positive and negative impacts on mosquito diversity and abundance. Research conducted in two different environments showed that deciduous forests have higher mosquito diversity, and climatic seasons can affect species overlap among mosquitoes.

Diversity of West Nile and Usutu virus strains in mosquitoes at an international airport in Austria

Karin Bakran-Lebl et al.

Summary: Through monitoring at the largest international airport in Austria for two years, it was found that in 2018, West Nile virus and Usutu virus were detected in mosquito pools, primarily caused by Culex mosquitoes. In 2019, no viral nucleic acids were detected in any mosquito pools. The study suggests that airports may serve as focal points for arbovirus activity, especially during epidemic years, and should be taken into consideration when designing mosquito control and arbovirus monitoring programs.

Effects of COVID-19 Non-Pharmacological Interventions on Dengue Infection: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Qin Wu et al.

Summary: Non-pharmacological interventions implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic have shown positive effects on communicable diseases, but their impact on dengue fever has been mixed. A systematic review and meta-analysis of global data found that NPIs have varying effectiveness in preventing and controlling dengue transmission, with significant reductions reported in many countries.

Monitoring Mosquito-Borne Arbovirus in Various Insect Regions in China in 2018

Yuan Fang et al.

Summary: The study identified multiple strains of arboviruses in different regions of China, with JEV GI-b genotype being the main circulating strain; the potential threat of GETV as a zoonosis is gradually increasing; the research revealed the dispersion and host range of ISFVs, emphasizing the importance of tracing the movements of vectors and hosts for the prevention and control of arbovirus outbreaks.

Metagenomic shotgun sequencing reveals host species as an important driver of virome composition in mosquitoes

Panpim Thongsripong et al.

Summary: High-throughput nucleic acid sequencing has accelerated the discovery of viruses in the environment, particularly among mosquitoes which are important for public health. Study in Thailand shows that virus presence patterns are primarily defined by host species rather than geography or habitat. Various microorganisms were also detected, emphasizing the importance of ecological information in viromic studies.

Metagenomic sequencing reveals viral abundance and diversity in mosquitoes from the Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia region, China

Xiaozhou He et al.

Summary: This study conducted taxonomic identification and high-throughput sequencing analysis to characterize the virome compositions of various mosquito species in northwestern China. Results showed that Culex pipiens and Culex tritaeniorhynchus carried more viral species, and mosquitoes collected in July exhibited greater viral diversity.

Molecular epidemiology of mosquito-borne viruses at the China-Myanmar border: discovery of a potential epidemic focus of Japanese encephalitis

Yuan Fang et al.

Summary: This study conducted mosquito-based arbovirus surveillance in Tengchong County and identified the presence of Japanese encephalitis virus and seven species of insect-specific flaviviruses, indicating a potential Japanese encephalitis epidemic focus in the area, emphasizing the importance of virus surveillance to prevent transmission.

A survey of mosquito-borne and insect-specific viruses in hospitals and livestock markets in western Kenya

Tatenda Chiuya et al.

Summary: This study investigated the frequency of virus-carrying mosquitoes in western Kenyan counties, highlighting Ae. aegypti and Cx. pipiens s.l. as the most common species. The presence of Sindbis virus and other viruses like AeFV and Culex flavivirus in the mosquito population, especially in ISFs, suggests potential implications for arbovirus transmission in the region.

The virome of vector mosquitoes

Joao P. P. de Almeida et al.

Summary: Mosquitoes are major vectors for arboviruses of medical importance, with a virome in mosquitoes being of special interest. In addition to arboviruses, mosquitoes carry ISVs that may interact with arboviruses and impact mosquito vector competence. Research on the virome of vector mosquitoes may lead to novel strategies for preventing arbovirus outbreaks.
