Enterocytozoon bieneusi

Wei Li et al.

Summary: Enterocytozoon bieneusi is a microsporidium that causes over 90% of human microsporidiosis cases, with symptoms including diarrhea and wasting. Transmission occurs through ingestion of contaminated water and food. The parasite has over 500 genotypes, some of which are zoonotic and pose a threat to public health.

Taxonomy and molecular epidemiology of Cryptosporidium and Giardia - a 50 year perspective (1971-2021)

Summary: Protozoan parasites Cryptosporidium and Giardia are significant causes of diarrhoea worldwide, with numerous named species and genotypes recognized. Zoonotic transmission plays an important role in the epidemiology, and the development of sequencing tools provides evidence for this. Comparative whole genome sequencing offers key information on genetic mechanisms and enables future One Health management.

Detection of Intestinal Parasites and Genetic Characterization of Enterocytozoon bieneusi in Hedgehogs from China

Xiao-Qing Gong et al.

Summary: Hedgehogs can act as hosts for Enterocytozoon bieneusi and may play a role in transmitting the parasite to humans. A study showed that 9.8% of hedgehogs were positive for E. bieneusi, while none tested positive for Cryptosporidium and Blastocystis spp. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that the hedgehog strains belonged to four novel genotypes closely related to type IV of group 1c.

Zoonotic giardiasis: an update

Weilong Cai et al.

Summary: Recent data suggests that humans are primarily infected with Giardia duodenalis assemblages A and B, while host-adapted assemblages are common in animals, indicating that zoonotic giardiasis may be less common and mostly related to contact with a small number of animal species. Future studies should focus on advanced genetic characterization of isolates from humans and animals living in the same household or community to better understand zoonotic transmission of G. duodenalis in different environmental and socioeconomic settings.

An investigation of endoparasites and the determinants of parasite infection in European hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus) from Denmark

Sophie Lund Rasmussen et al.

Summary: The study revealed regional differences in the endoparasite species carried by European hedgehogs in Denmark, highlighting the importance of caring for hedgehogs locally and releasing them back into their original habitat to prevent the spread of endoparasite infections. Additionally, age was found to be the significant factor affecting the prevalence of endoparasites in hedgehogs.

Zoonotic parasites in farmed exotic animals in China: Implications to public health

Yaqiong Guo et al.

Summary: Farmed exotic animals in China are at risk of spreading pathogens brought in from their native habitats, although host adaptation has reduced the potential for cross-species and zoonotic transmission. Despite high prevalence of pathogens due to stress from captivity, there is reduced pathogen diversity compared with their wild relatives. Control measures should be implemented to prevent spillover of indigenous pathogens to humans and farm animals.

Summary: This study aimed to expand the knowledge on human cryptosporidiosis in Sweden by studying Cryptosporidium-positive fecal samples collected from patients infected in Sweden and abroad between 2013-2014. The research revealed a large diversity of species and subtypes, with zoonotic C. parvum subtypes dominating in both local and travel-related cases, while infections by non-hominis and non-parvum species were common in both settings.

Microsporidiosis in Humans

Bing Han et al.

Summary: Microsporidia are obligate intracellular pathogens that infect a wide range of invertebrate and vertebrate hosts, causing infections in various organ systems. Treatment typically involves albendazole and fumagillin, with immune restoration aiding in infection resolution. While the prevalence of microsporidiosis in AIDS patients has decreased in the United States due to cART, infections continue globally and can still occur in the US with low CD4 counts despite cART.
