Associations of Chronic Kidney Disease With Dementia Before and After TIA and Stroke Population-Based Cohort Study

Dearbhla M. Kelly et al.

Summary: In patients with TIA and stroke, chronic kidney disease (CKD) was not independently associated with either pre- or postevent dementia, suggesting that renal-specific mechanisms are unlikely to play an important role in the etiology.

Statin use and risk of dementia or Alzheimer's disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies

Elena Olmastroni et al.

Summary: The meta-analysis found that statin use was associated with a decreased risk of dementia and Alzheimer's disease. There was no difference in dementia risk reduction between men and women. High-potency statins may be more effective in reducing dementia risk compared to low-potency statins.

Chronic Kidney Disease and Cognitive Impairment

Asam Murtaza et al.

Summary: Chronic kidney disease is closely associated with cognitive impairment, with vascular and metabolic factors playing a role. Cognitive impairment in CKD leads to reduced functional capacity, decreased quality of life, and increased mortality. Further research is needed to develop therapeutic interventions for cognitive decline in CKD patients, especially those undergoing hemodialysis.

Kidney Function, Kidney Function Decline, and the Risk of Dementia in Older Adults A Registry-Based Study

Hong Xu et al.

Summary: The study conducted in Stockholm with 329,822 residents aged 65 and above reveals a positive association between lower eGFR levels and higher risk of dementia, with a higher risk observed in those with eGFR <30 mL/min. Furthermore, a faster decline in eGFR (>2 mL/min/1.73m²/y) is associated with an increased risk of dementia.

Kidney Function, Kidney Function Decline, and the Risk of Dementia in Older Adults

Hong Xu et al.

Summary: This study found that both lower kidney function and a steeper decline in kidney function are associated with an increased risk of developing dementia, with a higher risk for vascular dementia compared to Alzheimer's disease. Up to 10% of dementia cases could be attributed to a low eGFR, a proportion higher than other risk factors such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
