Evaluation of Antimicrobial, Antiadhesive and Co-Aggregation Activity of a Multi-Strain Probiotic Composition against Different Urogenital Pathogens

Patrizia Malfa et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of a multi-strain probiotic formulation in inhibiting urogenital pathogen adhesion and growth. The results showed that the multi-strain formulation completely inhibited Trichomonas vaginalis infection and reduced Candida glabrata and Neisseria gonorrheae growth. Each single strain also exhibited significant antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli. The study demonstrated that the three strains and their mixture are effective in preventing urogenital infections.

Antimicrobial potential of known and novel probiotics on in vitro periodontitis biofilms

Wannes Van Holm et al.

Summary: Several oral diseases are caused by changes in the oral microbiome, and antibiotics are commonly used to treat them. However, due to antibiotic resistance, alternatives such as probiotics are being explored. This study compared the effects of different strains of Lactobacillus and Streptococcus salivarius on oral biofilms. It was found that certain Lactobacillus strains reduced the pathobiont A. actinomycetemcomitans, while S. salivarius strains were more effective against other pathobionts.

Transcriptome analysis of Fusobacterium nucleatum reveals differential gene expression patterns in the biofilm versus planktonic cells

Tian Zhao et al.

Summary: Periodontitis is a chronic infectious disease that can lead to various dental problems and even tooth loss. The dental plaque biofilm is a crucial factor in the development of periodontitis. Fusobacterium nucleatum plays an important role in the structure and ecology of dental plaque biofilms. Understanding the molecular mechanism of F. nucleatum during biofilm development is essential for controlling periodontitis. This study used RNA-sequencing and quantitative reverse transcriptase PCR (RT-qPCR) to analyze the gene expression profiles of F. nucleatum in the planktonic and biofilm phases. The results revealed significant differences in gene expression between the two states, with several genes related to metabolism, cell growth, division, oxidative stress, virulence, and oral malodor being differentially expressed. Additionally, the study identified lysine as a potential antibacterial and antibiofilm agent against F. nucleatum.

An animal derivative-free medium enhances Lactobacillus johnsonii LJO02 supernatant selective efficacy against the methicillin (oxacillin)-resistant Staphylococcus aureus virulence through key-metabolites

Diletta Francesca Squarzanti et al.

Summary: The spread of multidrug-resistant bacteria is a global health challenge and there is an urgent need for new methods to counteract opportunistic pathogen growth. In this study, the activity of cell-free supernatants (CFSs) produced by two strains of bacteria was compared. The CFS from one strain grown in an innovative animal derivative-free broth showed the highest efficacy in inhibiting the growth of the multidrug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, indicating its potential as a bacteriotherapeutic and bio-repair agent.

Periodontal Pathogens: A Crucial Link Between Periodontal Diseases and Oral Cancer

Tian-Jiao Li et al.

Summary: Emerging evidence indicates a strong connection between periodontal diseases, including oral cancer. The pathogens responsible for periodontal diseases play a crucial role in the development of oral cancer by directly interacting with the host's epithelium and indirectly creating an inflammatory environment conducive to carcinogenesis. Additionally, the functional properties of the oral microbial community are associated with cancer development. Maintaining oral hygiene is essential for preventing oral diseases, particularly oral cancer.
