Jun Cheng et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel Ni3S2@2D Co MOF catalyst was synthesized and exhibited excellent hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity in alkaline water electrolysis. The catalyst showed better HER performance than commercial Pt/C catalyst and demonstrated good stability. This can be attributed to the honeycomb structure formed by nickel sulfide nanosheets, which facilitated charge transfer and hydrogen evolution.

NiS2/MoS2 Hetero-Nanosheets Grown on Double-Layered Hollow Carbon Nanospheres for Enhanced Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Xinxin Luan et al.

Summary: NiS2/MoS2 composite nanosheets grown on double-layer hollow carbon spheres (DLHCs@NiS2/MoS2) exhibit high activity for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and low initial potential. The DLHCs as substrates reduce the aggregation of MoS2 nanosheets and provide more active sites. A two-step hydrothermal procedure is used to create layered NiS2/MoS2 heterojunctions on DLHCs, resulting in low overpotential and high HER activity in both acidic and alkaline conditions.

Strategies and Perspectives to Catch the Missing Pieces in Energy-Efficient Hydrogen Evolution Reaction in Alkaline Media

Sengeni Anantharaj et al.

Summary: Transition metal hydroxides and their heterostructures have been identified as highly active electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction in alkaline water electrolysis. The lattice hydroxide anions in metal hydroxides enhance the catalytic activity, but their poor electronic conductivity has been a concern. Advancements in heterostructured hydroxide materials with metallic and/or semiconducting phases have overcome this limitation, making them essential for energy-efficient alkaline HER.

Atomic layer deposition of NiS2 nanoparticles on surface-modified MoS2 nanosheets for improved electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction in acid media

Ning Li et al.

Summary: In this study, NiS2 nanoparticles were deposited on 2D MoS2 nanosheets using ALD to develop active and stable electrocatalysts for HER. The MoS2/NiS2 composites displayed improved HER catalytic efficiency as a working electrode, with overpotential and Tafel slope close to the benchmark Pt/C electrode. The enhanced HER activity of the composites may be attributed to synergistic effects between MoS2 and NiS2, providing guidance for designing efficient MoS2-based electrocatalysts for HER.

Summary: A one-step method for preparing vertically aligned Co doped MoS2 nanosheets on carbon cloth is reported, showing long-term durability and low voltage characteristics for hydrogen and oxygen production in water electrolysis at different pH conditions. The excellent properties of Co-MoS2@CC are attributed to the uncovering of more active sites and high porosity resulting from Co doping, which enhances conductivity and reduces hydrogen adsorption energy in HER and benefits catalytic active sites in OER.
