Estimating the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on rising trends in drug overdose mortality in the United States, 2018-2021

Hyunjung Lee et al.

Summary: This study aims to measure the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on drug-overdose mortality rates in the United States. The findings suggest that the pandemic has contributed to an increase in drug-overdose mortality, possibly due to social and economic disruptions caused by measures such as social isolation, job and income losses, and increased psychological distress.

Projected Estimates of Opioid Mortality After Community-Level Interventions

Benjamin P. Linas et al.

Summary: The study identified three interventions (initiating more people to MOUD, increasing retention with MOUD, and increasing naloxone distribution) associated with a 40% reduction in opioid overdose mortality. The results showed that only communities with increased capacity for MOUD treatment and retention experienced the desired decrease in overdose mortality. These findings could help guide the development of community-level interventions to combat opioid overdose deaths.

Changes in characteristics of drug overdose death trends during the COVID-19 pandemic

Catherine DiGennaro et al.

Summary: The trend of drug overdose deaths in Massachusetts during COVID19 shows an increase in deaths involving amphetamines and a continued decrease in deaths involving heroin. Fentanyl was present in over 85% of all overdose deaths, with alcohol involvement increasing year by year. The decrease in the percentage of White overdose decedents and the increase in Black decedents in 2020 underscore the need for interventions focused on racial equity.
