Red Blood Cell Folate Modifies the Association between Serum Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances and Antibody Concentrations in US Adolescents

Yu Zhang et al.

Summary: This study found that higher red blood cell folate levels were associated with lower serum concentrations of PFAS in adolescents. In adolescents with lower folate levels, there were inverse associations between serum PFAS and rubella/mumps antibodies. However, no associations were found in adolescents with higher folate levels. These findings suggest that folate may have important implications for mitigating immune related effects of PFAS.

Understanding the dynamics of physiological changes, protein expression, and PFAS in wildlife

Jacqueline Bangma et al.

Summary: The accumulation and elimination of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in wildlife and humans are largely due to interactions with proteins such as organic anion transporters, fatty acid binding proteins, and serum proteins like albumin. Changes in the environment and physiological factors can impact the distribution of PFAS-related proteins and subsequently affect PFAS levels. Understanding these relationships between biotic and abiotic environments, protein levels, and PFAS concentrations can improve study design and interpretation in wildlife research.

Gestational Perfluoroalkyl Substance Exposure and DNA Methylation at Birth and 12 Years of Age: A Longitudinal Epigenome-Wide Association Study

Yun Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, we examined the associations between gestational PFAS exposure and DNA methylation levels at birth and in adolescence using longitudinal data. The results showed that gestational PFAS exposure was associated with differences in several CpG sites at birth and at 12 years of age, which were linked to genes associated with PFAS-related health outcomes.

A review of the transplacental transfer of persistent halogenated organic pollutants: Transfer characteristics, influential factors, and mechanisms

Xiaolan Zhang et al.

Summary: This review examines the internal exposure levels of various HOPs in placenta, maternal and umbilical cord sera, as well as the transplacental transfer characteristics and distribution efficiencies of these compounds. Factors influencing the transfer efficiencies of HOPs and the mechanisms of their transplacental transport are discussed. Reported compound-specific transfer efficiencies and distribution efficiencies, expressed as concentration ratios, are summarized, indicating potential effects of physicochemical properties, metabolic capacities, and transporters on HOPs' transplacental transport.

PFAS concentration during pregnancy in relation to cardiometabolic health and birth outcomes

Summary: This study found that pregnant U.S. women are widely exposed to PFAS in late pregnancy, with positive associations between PFAS exposure and serum-lipid concentrations. While most PFAS were not associated with birth weight, PFNA may be associated with preterm birth.

Transplacental Transfer of Environmental Chemicals: Roles of Molecular Descriptors and Placental Transporters

Jing Li et al.

Summary: The study found significant variations in TTEs across 51 chemicals, which may be partially attributed to the influences of chemicals' molecular descriptors. Predictive models based on experimental TTEs and computed molecular descriptors suggest that specific descriptors, such as the topological polar surface area, can influence and predict chemicals' TTEs efficiently. Additionally, molecular docking analyses revealed transporter- and chemical-dependent binding affinities, highlighting the importance of molecular descriptors and placental transporters in the transplacental transfer of environmental chemicals.

Per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances exposure during pregnancy and adverse pregnancy and birth outcomes: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Xuping Gao et al.

Summary: The study findings suggest that exposure to PFOS, PFOA, and PFNA during pregnancy may be associated with an increased risk of preterm birth, while PFAS exposure may be linked to the risk of miscarriage and preeclampsia. More research is needed to confirm these findings due to limited evidence for most associations.

The occurrence of PFAS in human placenta and their binding abilities to human serum albumin and organic anion transporter 4

Yao Lu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the occurrence of both legacy and emerging PFAS in human placenta, revealing different concentrations and detection frequencies of various PFAS. Molecular docking calculations showed that the binding affinities of PFAS with proteins are correlated with chain length, indicating a close relationship between placental transfer of PFAS and chain length.

Dietary patterns and PFAS plasma concentrations in childhood: Project Viva, USA

Shravanthi M. Seshasayee et al.

Summary: This study examined the association between children's diet and PFAS, finding that intake of ice cream and soda was associated with higher plasma concentrations of specific PFAS. A dietary pattern consisting of primarily packaged foods and fish was identified to be correlated with higher PFAS concentrations. Further investigation is needed to inform measures to modify childhood PFAS exposure.
