Question prompt lists to improve communication between cancer patients and healthcare professionals

Johanna Terrasson et al.

Summary: This literature review aims to summarize the impact of question prompt lists (QPLs) on patient-physician communication in oncology and provide an overview of the current research on the development, adaptation, and implementation of these communication tools. Recent findings suggest that patients provided with QPLs tend to ask more questions, particularly on sensitive issues such as end-of-life discussions, and have better recall of the information provided. Adapting QPLs to cultural and clinical settings, as well as tailoring them to specific concerns of patients at different stages of care and different cancer types, is necessary to enhance the effectiveness of these tools in clinical practice. Further research involving healthcare professionals is needed to develop culturally and clinically appropriate QPLs and facilitate their implementation in routine practice.

A Question Prompt List for Advanced Cancer Patients Promoting Advance Care Planning: A French Randomized Trial

Carole Bouleuc et al.

Summary: The study found that using a question prompt list (QPL) in advance care planning can increase the number of questions raised by advanced cancer patients in outpatient palliative care consultations, particularly on palliative care and end-of-life issues. Additionally, patients using the QPL expressed higher satisfaction with doctors' technical skills and had less frequent avoidance coping responses.

Effect of question prompt lists for cancer patients on communication and mental health outcomes-A systematic review

Christian Keinki et al.

Summary: QPL interventions in oncological settings can change discussed topics, potentially increasing anxiety shortly before and after consultations while reducing anxiety during follow-up. Patients find QPLs more helpful than usual information, but the impact of QPL-only interventions on communicative processes and psychological outcomes is limited.
