Potential influence of fine aerosol chemistry on the optical properties in a semi-arid region

Pengfei Tian et al.

Summary: Based on comprehensive observations, it was found that organic matter and mineral dust contribute significantly to aerosol absorption, especially in the ultraviolet wavelength. These findings reveal the complexity of the relationship between aerosol chemistry and optical properties, and have important implications for regional air pollution and climate change.

Clear-Sky Direct Aerosol Radiative Forcing Uncertainty Associated with Aerosol Vertical Distribution Based on CMIP6 Models

Lu Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the uncertainty of anthropogenic aerosol's direct perturbation on Earth's energy balance, focusing on the aerosol vertical distribution. The research finds that the difference in aerosol vertical profiles contributes to around 20% of the total uncertainty in direct aerosol radiative forcing.

Wintertime vertical distribution of black carbon and single scattering albedo in a semi-arid region derived from tethered balloon observations

Xu Guan et al.

Summary: The vertical distribution of atmospheric aerosols, especially black carbon (BC) and single scattering albedo (SSA), in a semi-arid region of Northwest China in December 2018 was investigated using tethered balloon platform. It was found that BC profiles were influenced by local emissions, regional transport, ABL evolution, and topography, while SSA distribution was modulated by BC profiles. Diurnal variations showed that BC decreased and SSA increased in the ABL during daytime, but increased BC and decreased SSA at night.

Changes in physical and chemical properties of urban atmospheric aerosols and ozone during the COVID-19 lockdown in a semi-arid region

Yi Chang et al.

Summary: The study investigates the changes in urban atmospheric aerosols and ozone (O-3) during the COVID-19 lockdown in Lanzhou. The results show a decrease in fine particulate matter (PM2.5) by about 20% and an increase in O-3 by more than 100% during the lockdown. Primary emissions and secondary formation of PM2.5 decreased, while sulfur and nitrogen oxidation ratios increased in the afternoon. Aerosol scattering and absorption decreased, leading to an increase in visibility and slightly increased single scattering albedo (SSA). The enhanced O-3 production was explained by increased volatile organic compounds to nitrogen oxides ratio, decreased aerosol, and increased SSA. The primary emissions of secondary aerosol precursors significantly decreased, while Ox (NO2 and O-3) exhibited little change. Therefore, the study confirms enhanced secondary aerosol production efficiency during the lockdown, with a positive feedback among O-3 concentration, secondary aerosol formation, and SSA.

Biomass burning aerosols in most climate models are too absorbing

Hunter Brown et al.

Summary: The study finds that current climate models overestimate the absorptivity of biomass burning aerosols, leading to inaccurate estimates of their direct radiative effects. By modifying the refractive index, size, and mixing state of the aerosols, the models can better match observations and improve accuracy in predicting aerosol effects on solar radiation.

Brown Carbon in Primary and Aged Coal Combustion Emission

Haiyan Ni et al.

Summary: The experiments found that even after aging, most BrC is still insoluble in water. The mass absorption efficiency of primary organic aerosol (POA) was significantly higher than that of aged organic aerosol (SOA). Residential coal combustion emissions were among the strongest absorbing BrC organics among anthropogenic sources.

Exploring the Drivers and Photochemical Impact of the Positive Correlation between Single Scattering Albedo and Aerosol Optical Depth in the Troposphere

Wenjie Wang et al.

Summary: The study revealed a strong positive correlation between SSA and AOD, mainly influenced by the enhancement of secondary aerosol formation induced by increased humidity and photochemical aging. Neglecting this positive correlation could lead to significant overestimation of photolysis frequencies and ozone production rates at low AOD levels, and significant underestimation at high AOD levels.

Summary: The Chinese government has implemented the strictest clean air action plan since 2013, reducing PM2.5 mass concentration effectively. However, the impact on particle number concentrations has been less evaluated. The study observed a decrease in particle numbers of different sizes from 2012 to 2019, with an increasing impact from newly formed particles.

Evidence for Large Amounts of Brown Carbonaceous Tarballs in the Himalayan Atmosphere

Qi Yuan et al.

Summary: The study identifies light-absorbing tarballs in particles collected on the northern slope of the Himalayas, with about 28% of individual particles being tarballs. These tarballs, emitted from biomass burning in the Indo-Gangetic Plain, have a significant heating effect in the Himalayan atmosphere. The findings suggest that long-range transport of tarballs may play a crucial role in climate effects and glacial melting in the Himalayas.
