Unconventional Charge Transport in MgCr2O4 and Implications for Battery Intercalation Hosts

Ian D. Johnson et al.

Summary: Ion transport is a critical factor in determining the operating rates of batteries, and understanding it accurately is crucial for new battery technologies such as magnesium batteries. In this study, the long-range ion transport behavior in MgCr2O4 is examined, revealing the limitations of conventional theories in explaining the measured response. An extended theory is proposed that incorporates frictional interactions and nonideal free energies, which successfully describes the measured results. This study provides valuable insights for future materials design efforts.

Accelerated Kinetics Revealing Metastable Pathways of Magnesiation-Induced Transformations in MnO2 Polymorphs

Takuya Hatakeyama et al.

Summary: The study revealed that under conditions where the magnesium migration kinetics are sufficiently enhanced, MnO2 polymorphs can transform into Mg-including spinels and then rocksalt-like phases. Alpha-MnO2 was found to exhibit reversible magnesium intercalation at 150 degrees C, while lambda-MnO2 phase possessing spinel/rocksalt structure framework is thermally unstable.
