Active Brown Adipose Tissue Is Associated With a Healthier Metabolic Phenotype in Obesity

Carsten T. Herz et al.

Summary: This cross-sectional study found that individuals with severe obesity and active brown adipose tissue (BAT) have a healthier metabolic profile, characterized by lower visceral fat mass, decreased insulin resistance, lower systemic inflammation, and improved nonalcoholic fatty liver disease parameters.

Brown adipose tissue transplantation as a novel alternative to obesity treatment: a systematic review

Summary: BAT transplantation appears to reduce weight gain and white adipocyte size. It seems to promote the regeneration of healthy adipose tissue by activating endogenous BAT. Further studies are needed to evaluate the outcomes and procedures for potential clinical application.

Brown adipose tissue is associated with cardiometabolic health

Tobias Becher et al.

Summary: A retrospective analysis of over 50,000 patients' F-18-FDG PET/CT scans revealed that individuals with brown adipose tissue had lower odds of cardiometabolic conditions. The presence of brown adipose tissue was independently correlated with lower odds of type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, coronary artery disease, cerebrovascular disease, congestive heart failure, and hypertension. The beneficial effects of brown adipose tissue were more pronounced in individuals with overweight or obesity, suggesting a potential role in mitigating the deleterious effects of obesity.

Brown and beige adipose tissue: a novel therapeutic strategy for obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus

Long Cheng et al.

Summary: There are two major types of adipose tissue in mammals, white adipose tissue (WAT) and brown adipose tissue (BAT), with different functions. White adipocytes can transdifferentiate into beige adipocytes, which play a significant role in the treatment of obesity and diabetes. Activation of BAT and induction of browning of WAT may provide a new strategy for improving glycolipid metabolism and insulin resistance in obese and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients.

Comparative Study of Human Pluripotent Stem Cell-Derived Endothelial Cells in Hydrogel-Based Culture Systems

Zhanqi Wang et al.

Summary: Human pluripotent stem cell-derived endothelial cells (hPSC-ECs) from different culture systems, such as 3D hydrogel cultures, displayed distinct phenotypes in terms of vasculature development, extracellular matrix, angiogenesis, and glycolysis. 3D hydrogel systems mimicked a physiologically relevant microenvironment, showing higher gene expressions in key biological processes compared to traditional 2D cultures. Both PEG and alginate hydrogel systems showed promise in advancing the applications of hPSC-ECs in various biomedical fields.

Brown adipose tissue is associated with healthier body fat distribution and metabolic benefits independent of regional adiposity

Andreas G. Wibmer et al.

Summary: The study found that brown adipose tissue (BAT) is associated with lower visceral adipose tissue and higher subcutaneous adipose tissue, which helps reduce central obesity. Additionally, BAT is independently linked to lower blood glucose, improved lipids, and a lower prevalence of type 2 diabetes.

Non-immunogenic Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells, a Promising Way Forward for Allogenic Transplantations for Neurological Disorders

Henriette Reventlow Frederiksen et al.

Summary: Neurological disorders encompass a wide range of diseases affecting the brain and nervous system, currently lacking curative treatments and relying on symptomatic relief. Utilizing hiPSC and animal models has been crucial in understanding disease mechanisms, while personalized treatments through gene editing are promising but time-consuming and expensive.
