Light-matter coupling in large-area van der Waals superlattices

Pawan Kumar et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the realization of excitonic metamaterials using atomically thin two-dimensional chalcogenide monolayers, enabling optical dispersion engineering and strong light-matter coupling. The engineered superlattice structures show evidence of exciton-polariton formation and high fidelity repeat units, paving the way for scalable designer optical metamaterials from atomically thin layers.

Dielectric permittivity, conductivity and breakdown field of hexagonal boron nitride

A. Pierret et al.

Summary: This study aims to refine the dielectric characterization of hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) in terms of low-field permittivity and high-field strength and conductivity. The results show that hBN has a low-field dielectric constant of around 3.4 and follows the Frenkel-Pool law for current leakage at high-field, with similar dielectric constant and trap energy as standard technologically relevant dielectrics.

Creation of moire bands in a monolayer semiconductor by spatially periodic dielectric screening

Yang Xu et al.

Summary: Moire superlattices of two-dimensional van der Waals materials serve as a powerful tool for designing electronic band structures and exploring emergent physical phenomena. The creation of long-wavelength periodic potential and moire bands in a crystal through interlayer electronic hybridization or atomic corrugation when two materials are overlaid is a key concept. A new approach based on spatially periodic dielectric screening has been demonstrated to create moire bands in a monolayer semiconductor, showing that monolayer semiconductors can function as sensitive local dielectric sensors.

Strongly correlated excitonic insulator in atomic double layers

Liguo Ma et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates a strongly correlated two-dimensional excitonic insulator ground state in transition metal dichalcogenide semiconductor double layers, providing direct thermodynamic evidence for the state. Capacitance measurements show that the exciton fluid is compressible but charge-incompressible. An exciton phase diagram reveals both the Mott transition and interaction-stabilized quasi-condensation.

Charged Bosons Made of Fermions in Bilayer Structures with Strong Metallic Screening

Zheng Sun et al.

Summary: Research has shown that two-dimensional monolayer structures of transition metal dichalogenides can accommodate various high-order excitonic bound states, such as trions, biexcitons, and charged biexcitons. Experimental evidence and theoretical basis have revealed a new bound excitonic complex in a bilayer structure, consisting of two free carriers bound to an exciton. These four-carrier bound states, being charged bosons, could potentially be a new pathway to superconductivity.
