In-situ observation of the gas evolution process on the air electrode of Zn-air batteries during charging

Yi He et al.

Summary: An in-depth investigation into gas evolution on the air electrode during charging process of Zn-air batteries reveals that bubble formation significantly affects electrochemical performance. Increasing catalyst loading leads to smaller and sparser bubbles on the electrode surface, improving stability during charging. At low current densities, self-cleaning of the electrode from bubbles is ideal for efficient charge.

Insight into the bubble-induced overpotential towards high-rate charging of Zn-air batteries

Yi He et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of bubble dynamics and induced overpotential on the electrochemical performance during high-rate charging in rechargeable Zn-air batteries. The results show that the concentration overpotential is reduced by the bubble induced convection-disturbance and sink-absorption, while the activation overpotential is significantly larger than the ohmic component. Furthermore, a formula is proposed to express the whole overpotential, incorporating potential oscillation from hydrogen bubble evolution on the Zn electrodes.

Daniele Giusi et al.

Summary: Copper oxide-based gas-diffusion electrodes (CuxO/GDEs) were studied for CO2 electrocatalytic reduction in presence and absence of liquid electrolyte (liquid- and gas-phase operations). The catalytic behavior and selectivity paths were found to be significantly influenced by the choice of liquid or gas-phase operations. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was demonstrated to be a strategic tool for optimizing performance beyond the properties of the electrocatalysts themselves.
