Pre-treatment Methods for Accurate Determination of Total Nitrogen and Organic Carbon Contents and their Stable Isotopic Compositions: Re-evaluation from Geological Reference Materials

Wataru Fujisaki et al.

Summary: This study investigated the biases of three pre-treatment methods for nitrogen and carbon measurements in marine, stream, and lacustrine geological reference materials. The results showed that appropriate pre-treatment methods are crucial for deriving accurate interpretations of ancient/modern environmental processes and mechanisms.

Laboratory Assessment of the Impact of Chemical Oxidation, Mineral Dissolution, and Heating on the Nitrogen Isotopic Composition of Fossil-Bound Organic Matter

Summary: The effect of oxidative degradation, fossil dissolution, and thermal alteration on the N isotopic composition of different fossils was studied. The experiments showed that these processes had negligible effects on the N isotopic composition and content of the fossils. The organic matter in fossils is well protected by the mineral matrix.

Iron(II) in the world's oxygen deficient zones

James W. Moffett

Summary: Oxygen deficient zones (ODZs) in marine water column have very low oxygen concentration, with iron (Fe) existing in the Fe(II) oxidation state and playing a major role in iron transport and enrichment in nitrate reduction regions. Recent studies suggest that lateral advection of Fe(II) from reducing sediments is a major source, with physical processes acting in a narrow density range. Tracers like iodine and Ra-228 have been useful in understanding these processes.

Galapagos upwelling driven by localized wind-front interactions

Alexander Forryan et al.

Summary: The Galapagos Islands are a biological hotspot, with the ecosystem relying on seasonal oceanic upwelling events that are controlled by local northward winds. Research shows that highly localized atmosphere-ocean interactions play a crucial role in the upwelling activities in the Galapagos Islands.

Development of Deep-Sea Anoxia in Panthalassa During the Lopingian (Late Permian): Insights From Redox-Sensitive Elements and Multivariate Analysis

Tetsuji Onoue et al.

Summary: The study investigates the geochemical characteristics of late Permian seafloor rocks, revealing the evolution of oceanic anoxia that occurred before the end-Permian mass extinction event. The appearance of euxinic conditions with hydrogen sulfide may be linked to intensified continental weathering and temperature rise.
