Global seasonal forecasts of marine heatwaves

Michael G. Jacox et al.

Summary: Research shows that the onset, intensity, and duration of marine heatwaves are often predictable, with skillful forecasts possible from 1 to 12 months in advance depending on region, season, and climate mode status. Setting decision thresholds based on the probability of MHW occurrence can promote climate resilience in global marine ecosystems.

Morlet Cross-Wavelet Analysis of Climatic State Variables Expressed as a Function of Latitude, Longitude, and Time: New Light on Extreme Events

Jean-Louis Pinault

Summary: This study uses wavelet analysis to investigate the role of coherent Sea Surface Temperature (SST) anomalies produced by oceanic Rossby waves in extreme climatic events. Two case studies, including a marine heatwave in the northwestern Pacific and an extreme flood event in Germany, are examined. The findings highlight the importance of ocean-atmosphere interactions and phase homogenization of SST anomalies in extreme events.

Improvements of the Daily Optimum Interpolation Sea Surface Temperature (DOISST) Version 2.1

Boyin Huang et al.

Summary: The DOISST v2.0 dataset exhibited cold biases in certain oceans due to the lack of drifting-buoy SST data ingestion, resulting in discrepancies with Argo observations. By conducting experiments and upgrading to version 2.1, biases were effectively reduced in the global ocean and Indian Ocean.

Extensive Marine Heatwaves at the Sea Surface in the Northwestern Pacific Ocean in Summer 2021

Hiroshi Kuroda et al.

Summary: In July-August 2021, intense marine heatwaves occurred over extensive areas of the northwestern Pacific Ocean, with the largest extent and intensity since 1982. These heatwaves were mainly generated by atmospheric forcing, starting around July 10 and disappearing by August 18.

The GPU version of LASG/IAP Climate System Ocean Model version 3 (LICOM3) under the heterogeneous-compute interface for portability (HIP) framework and its large-scale application

Pengfei Wang et al.

Summary: A high-resolution global ocean general circulation model based on LICOM3 was developed using GPU implementations, achieving significant performance improvements. By utilizing a large number of GPUs, the model was able to reproduce observations and generate various small-scale activities.
