Experimental uncertainty of a physical model of a tanker moored to a terminal in a port

H. S. Abdelwahab et al.

Summary: This paper presents the uncertainty modelling of experimental results for a physical model of a tanker moored to a terminal inside a port. The aim of the study is to obtain novel results for wave elevation, ship motions, and loads on mooring lines and fenders. The presented physical model study shows that the results can replicate waves and motions with uncertainties less than 9% of the significant amplitudes.

Review of the uncertainties associated to hull girder hydroelastic response and wave load predictions

Spyros Hirdaris et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the importance of uncertainties in hull girder loads influenced by flexible fluid structure interactions, with a focus on hydroelastic modelling, simulation, and model tests. The challenges in realizing and modelling uncertainties are discussed, including limitations of numerical methods, ambiguity of model tests, and systematic use of data from different methods. An approach to assess uncertainty in hydroelastic responses to wave loading is recommended, and an example is provided to demonstrate its application.

Benchmark study of global linear wave loads on a container ship with forward speed

Josko Parunov et al.

Summary: This benchmark study evaluated the uncertainty in linear transfer functions due to different seakeeping codes and their impact on long-term extreme vertical wave bending moments. The results showed that strip theory codes had the lowest uncertainty and best agreement with experimental results compared to other methods.

Uncertainty analysis of linear vertical bending moment in model tests and numerical prediction

Hailong Si et al.

Summary: Based on the uncertainty expansion theory, this study established a set of methods for analyzing accuracy and uncertainty of wave load measurements on ship models in wave basins. The important factors affecting measurement accuracy were assessed through linear multi-segment model tests of wave loads. Two numerical methods were used to evaluate the prediction errors and uncertainties of different moments. The research found that updating test instruments and approaches can decrease the standard uncertainty of model tests. The uncertainty caused by calibration coefficients and moments of inertia were the most significant factors. As the wave direction changes, the errors and uncertainties of numerical predictions increase, with the smallest prediction error for vertical bending moment and the largest for torsional moment.

CFD-Modified Potential Simulation on Seakeeping Performance of a Barge

Seol Nam et al.

Summary: This study proposes a CMP model which combines linear potential theory with CFD simulations to analyze the seakeeping performance of a small vessel. The model's reliability is verified through comparison with experimental results, and the computational time is also compared under different wave conditions. The results show that the CMP model has small relative errors compared to the potential analysis alone.

Numerical investigation on a container ship navigating in irregular waves by a fully nonlinear time domain method

Ying Tang et al.

Summary: A three-dimensional fully nonlinear time domain method is introduced to simulate ship advancing in regular and irregular waves, using a mixed Eulerian-Lagrangian method and boundary element method. The spring analogy method is utilized to ensure mesh optimization, and auxiliary functions are deduced to decouple strongly nonlinear hydrodynamic forces and ship motion. The numerical results for a 13500 TEU container ship are validated against experimental data, showing good agreement in regular and irregular waves.
