Rock Fabric of Lacustrine Shale and Its Influence on Residual Oil Distribution in the Upper Cretaceous Qingshankou Formation, Songliao Basin

Mianmo Meng et al.

Summary: This study focused on the rock fabric and residual oil distribution in the Upper Cretaceous Qingshankou Formation in the Songliao Basin. Various analysis methods were employed to determine the material composition and pore characteristics. The results showed that the organic matter was predominantly type I, with clay being the main mineral component. Nano-scale inorganic pores and micro-scale organic pores were found, with small pores containing a significant amount of residual oil. This study contributes to the understanding of rock fabric and its impact on residual oil distribution in lacustrine shale.

Insight into Water Occurrence and Pore Size Distribution by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance in Marine Shale Reservoirs, Southern China

Mianmo Meng et al.

Summary: This study investigates the water occurrence and pore size distribution in moderate-shallow and deep marine shales using various experimental methods. The results show that deep shales have abundant organic nanopores, while moderate-shallow shales have few organic pores. The high irreducible water saturation in both types of shales is attributed to the strong capillary force of the nanopores. The study provides insights into the characterization of water occurrence and pore size distribution in marine shales.

Organic matter transformation ratio, hydrocarbon expulsion efficiency and shale oil enrichment type in Chang 73 shale of Upper Triassic Yanchang Formation in Ordos Basin, NW China

Wenzhi Zhao et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes the organic matter transformation ratio, hydrocarbon expulsion efficiency, and roof/floor sealing conditions of the Chang 7(3) shale in the Yanchang Formation, evaluating its major enrichment type of shale oil. The results show that more than 50% of the organic matters in the shale have not transformed into hydrocarbons, and the lower the maturity, the greater the proportion of untransformed organic matters. The shale exhibits poor roof/floor sealing conditions and low-medium mature shale oil is believed to be the major enrichment type, with potential for shale oil enrichment in areas with good sealing conditions and without faults. Relevant in-situ conversion technologies and resource availability and distribution should be further studied.

Pore Structure and Multi-Scale Fractal Characteristics of Adsorbed Pores in Marine Shale: A Case Study of the Lower Silurian Longmaxi Shale in the Sichuan Basin, China

Haijiao Fu et al.

Summary: Research indicates that free gas is crucial for large-scale development of shale gas, while adsorbed gas is also significant for sustainable development. However, there is insufficient research on the pore structure and multi-scale fractal characteristics of absorbed pores in marine shale, which limits the understanding of gas production behavior from shale reservoirs.

Supercritical High-Pressure Methane Adsorption on the Lower Cambrian Shuijingtuo Shale in the Huangling Anticline Area, South China: Adsorption Behavior, Storage Characteristics, and Geological Implications

Sile Wei et al.

Summary: This study investigated the gas adsorption behavior and storage capacities of Lower Cambrian Shuijingtuo Shale in South China through supercritical high-pressure methane adsorption analysis. The shale gas at the burial depth of Shuijingtuo Shale is mainly composed of adsorbed gas, indicating that free gas is predominantly produced during initial gas development. The findings suggest that shale gas recovery can be improved by keeping the operating pressure as low as possible to release the adsorbed gas from the shale matrix.

Quartz types, origins and organic matter-hosted pore systems in the lower cambrian Niutitang Formation, middle yangtze platform, China

Tian Dong et al.

Summary: Quartz exists in five main forms in shales, including detrital quartz, siliceous skeletons, overgrowth quartz, microcrystalline quartz, and euhedral quartz aggregates. Dissolution and re-precipitation of siliceous skeletons provide the major silica source for authigenic quartz in the Niutitang Formation.

Mineral diagenetic control of expulsion efficiency in organic-rich mudrocks, Bakken Formation (Devonian-Mississippian), Williston Basin, North Dakota, USA

Kitty L. Milliken et al.

Summary: The organic-rich mudrocks of the Bakken Formation exhibit significant compositional heterogeneity and expulsion behavior. Higher maturity levels result in a wider range of methane to iso-butane ratio, indicating varying expulsion efficiencies. The cementation status of the mudrocks plays a key role in determining the retention or expulsion of generated hydrocarbons.

Diagenesis and alteration of subsurface volcanic ash beds of the Vaca Muerta Formation, Argentina

Philippine Rutman et al.

Summary: Vaca Muerta is a marine source rock with great petroleum potential, containing natural fractures filled with fibrous calcite, concretions, and ash beds. An exhaustive diagenetic study of the ash beds was conducted, revealing two facies with complex alterations, both displaying a well-marked calc-alkaline magmatic signature. The clay-rich ash beds are characterized by illite/smectite assemblage, while the calcite-cemented ones consist of argillitized glass shards and pumice fragments cemented by calcite.

Quartz types, silica sources and their implications for porosity evolution and rock mechanics in the Paleozoic Longmaxi Formation shale, Sichuan Basin

Hao Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of various forms and sources of quartz on the porosity evolution and rock mechanics of shale samples from the Longmaxi Formation in the Sichuan Basin. Different types of quartz were identified, along with their associated pores, with biogenic silica playing a substantial role in total silica content. The origin of quartz was found to be significant in understanding porosity evolution and rock mechanics, with biogenic silica being a major contributor to brittleness in the lower Longmaxi Formation.

Controls on silica enrichment of lower cambrian organic-rich shale deposits

Ping Gao et al.

Summary: The study presents the potential controls on silica enrichment in Lower Cambrian shale deposits in South China, indicating that factors like continental weathering, aeolian input, and biological activity may have influenced the excess silica concentrations. It is suggested that strong chemical weathering during warm, humid paleo-climate conditions led to the delivery of dissolved silica to the global ocean, while diminished aeolian input favored a silica-rich ocean during specific time periods. The interaction among paleo-climate fluctuations, increased nutrient delivery to the ocean, and redox variability was critical to the diversification of sponge spicules and the appearance of radiolarian during the Cambrian Explosion.

Geological Characteristics of Shale Gas in Different Strata of Marine Facies in South China

Yufang Wang et al.

Summary: This passage discusses the well-developed marine shale strata in the Middle and Upper Yangtze region of South China, with Wufeng Longmaxi shale gas being the only one developed on a large scale currently. The Sinian and Cambrian shale gases are still in the exploration stage. The different shale strata show varying characteristics in lithological features, influenced by tectonic patterns, sedimentary environments, and diagenesis caused by tectonic subsidence. This will have an impact on fracturing technology and effectiveness in the future.

The influence of syngenetic hydrothermal silica fluid on organic matter preservation in lower Cambrian Niutitang Formation, South China

Xiaomin Xie et al.

Summary: The study in Guizhou province, SW China showed that early Cambrian rocks were influenced differently by syngenetic hydrothermal silica fluids, with siliceous shales containing the highest organic carbon content and nutrient elements concentrations. Organisms were best preserved in chert, followed by siliceous shales and mudstones, indicating a good environment for preservation provided by hydrothermal silica fluids. Studies like this can provide insights for evaluating hydrocarbon generation potential in early Cambrian source rocks.
