On the runup parameterisation for reef-lined coasts

Gemma L. Franklin et al.

Summary: This study aims to develop runup parameterisations for reef-lined coasts using a numerical model and machine learning approach. Analysis suggests that incorporating reef geometry factors can improve the prediction of coastal flooding vulnerability in reef environments. Further research efforts should focus on incorporating additional effects such as bed roughness and three-dimensional processes.

Assessment and optimisation of runup formulae for beaches fronted by fringing reefs based on physical experiments

A. Astorga-Moar et al.

Summary: The experimental results indicate that accurate predictions for runup on fringing reef-fronted beaches require appropriate wave and water level conditions, and the modified formulations can better describe the runup height.

Sustained coral reef growth in the critical wave dissipation zone of a Maldivian atoll

Paul S. Kench et al.

Summary: The rise in sea level is exceeding the ability of coral reefs to grow and protect shorelines, causing increased coastal flooding and erosion. A new study presents a method to directly measure contemporary coral reef growth and reveals varying growth rates in different areas of a Maldivian atoll reef. The findings emphasize the importance of understanding reef growth in the critical wave dissipation zone to improve predictions and evaluations of coastal hazards.

Tropical Biogeomorphic Seagrass Landscapes for Coastal Protection: Persistence and Wave Attenuation During Major Storms Events

R. K. James et al.

Summary: The intensity of major storm events is projected to rise with the warming of the oceans, likely exacerbating coastal erosion. Natural ecosystems' ability to withstand extreme storms like tropical hurricanes has yet to be thoroughly tested. Caribbean seagrass meadows have shown resilience to extreme storm events and provide effective coastal protection services for sandy beaches.

Evidence of Coastal Changes in the West Coast of Naxos Island, Cyclades, Greece

Niki Evelpidou et al.

Summary: Coastal lagoons and dunes play a crucial role in providing habitats and protection against sea level rise and storms, but their small size makes them vulnerable. Research on the western coasts of Naxos Island identified sea level rise, tectonic subsidence, and anthropogenic pressures as major threats to these ecosystems. Protection, restoration, and control of human activities are prioritized for their conservation.

Coral Reef Restorations Can Be Optimized to Reduce Coastal Flooding Hazards

Floortje E. Roelvink et al.

Summary: The study shows that broader and shallower coral restoration projects are most effective in reducing wave-driven flooding, such as those on the upper fore reef and between the reef flat and shoreline, compared to deeper locations on the fore reef or at the reef crest. It suggests that planting more physically robust coral species in shallower and more energetic locations can increase the coastal hazard risk reduction potential of reef restoration.

Timescales of emergence of chronic flooding in the major economic center of Guadeloupe

Goneri Le Cozannet et al.

Summary: This study discusses the impact of sea-level rise due to anthropogenic climate change on chronic flooding events in low-lying coastal areas such as Petit Cul-de-sac marin. The findings suggest that adaptation pathways need to be considered urgently to address the rapidly increasing risks of chronic flooding, particularly for critical infrastructures in the region.
