Recent progress in superabsorbent polymers for concrete

Christof Schroefl et al.

Summary: Scientific interest in superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) used in conjunction with cement-based building materials has shifted towards polymer physico-chemical topics, focusing on absorption/desorption kinetics, retention of absorbed liquid, and related principles. The effects of SAPs in concrete include modifying rheology, internal curing, self-sealing and self-healing of cracks, and enhancing freezing-and-thawing durability. Recent research also explores reducing fire spalling and promoting plant growth on green wall facades using SAPs.

Comparative performance analysis of different swelling kinetic models for the evaluation of shale swelling

Shaine Mohammadali Lalji et al.

Summary: This research study compares different kinetic models and a scaling swelling model to estimate experimental results of three different shale samples, finding that the scaling swelling model is the most accurate. Peleg's model is found to be inaccurate in predicting the experimental results, while the pseudo-second-order kinetic model shows better performance with increasing clay content. Validated by statistical error analysis, the results demonstrate the importance of understanding the transient states and higher water activity in shale samples.

Sonochemical synthesis and swelling behavior of Fe3O4 nanocomposite based on poly(acrylamide-co-acrylic acid) hydrogel for drug delivery application

Rajabali Ebrahimi et al.

Summary: The addition of magnetic nanoparticles provides unique properties to hydrogels, allowing for applications in targeted drug delivery, separation, and sensing. A novel magnetite nanocomposite based on poly (acrylamide-co-acrylic acid) hydrogel was efficiently prepared through a simple, cost-effective, and eco-friendly process. The nanocomposite displayed controlled swelling behavior in different mediums, with the ability to absorb and release drugs fluvoxamine and ciprofloxacin effectively in a phosphate buffer solution.

PDMS Curing Inhibition on 3D-Printed Molds: Why? Also, How to Avoid It?

Bastien Venzac et al.

Summary: A systematic study using 16 commercial resins identified a fast and straightforward treatment for 3D-printed structures to support accurate PDMS replication using UV and/or thermal post-curing. Analysis revealed that phosphine oxide-based photo-initiators were poisoning the Pt-based PDMS catalyst, but were eliminated and recombined into high molecular weight species upon UV and/or thermal treatments.
