Effective and innovative procedures to use phosphogypsum waste in different application domains: review of the environmental, economic challenges and life cycle assessment

Brahim Bouargane et al.

Summary: Phosphogypsum (PG) waste is a by-product of wet-process phosphoric acid manufacturing, with global annual production ranging from 100 to 300 million tons. Only a small percentage of this waste is utilized, with the rest being discharged into the sea or stockpiled, posing risks to the environment and human health. This review explores alternative ways to recycle and use PG waste, highlighting its potential as a secondary raw material in a circular economy. The study also covers the applications of PG in various sectors, such as agriculture, brick and cement production, road construction, and rare earth elements extraction.

Design of organically modified sepiolite and its use as adsorbent for hazardous Malachite Green dye removal from water

Fadwa Largo et al.

Summary: A novel adsorbent design method of sepiolite was developed by organic surface modification and carbonization, and the obtained carbon@sepiolite composites exhibited excellent adsorption properties for the removal of malachite green dye from water. Various characterization techniques confirmed the successful synthesis and good adsorption capacity of the composites. The adsorption behavior of malachite green molecules on the modified sepiolite surface was well described by kinetic and equilibrium models, suggesting a homogeneous monolayer adsorption. The thermodynamic analysis indicated the spontaneous and endothermic nature of the adsorption process. Overall, this work provides a facile approach for the design of organically modified sepiolite as efficient adsorbents for waste recycling.

Combined molecular dynamics simulations and experimental studies of the removal of cationic dyes on the eco-friendly adsorbent of activated carbon decorated montmorillonite Mt@AC

Hassan Ouachtak et al.

Summary: In recent years, researchers have been paying attention to the combination of experimental and theoretical study in order to understand adsorbate/adsorbent interactions. This study aims to investigate the adsorption behavior of two cationic dyes, methylene blue (MB) and crystal violet (CV), on a green adsorbent composite called Montmorillonite@activated carbon (Mt@AC), using molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. The results show that the adsorption of both dyes follows the Langmuir adsorption model, with maximum adsorption capacities of 801.7 mg g(-1) for methylene blue and 1110.8 mg g(-1) for crystal violet. Molecular dynamics simulations reveal that crystal violet has a better affinity with both the activated carbon sheet and montmorillonite framework compared to methylene blue.

Elaboration and properties of a new SDS/CTAB@Montmorillonite organoclay composite as a superb adsorbent for the removal of malachite green from aqueous solutions

Redouane Haounati et al.

Summary: The SDS/CTAB@Mt composite, prepared through the synergistic effect of CTAB and SDS, showed a highly negatively charged surface and good adsorption properties for malachite green. The adsorption process followed the Langmuir model and pseudo-second-order kinetics, with a maximum adsorbed amount of 1021.45 mg/g. Thermodynamic parameters indicated that the adsorption of malachite green onto the composite was spontaneous, exothermic, and led to a decrease in randomness of adsorbed molecules.
