Research on protective mechanism of semicircular arc pre-crack under impact load

Chenglong Xiao et al.

Summary: In this study, a plexiglass (PMMA) specimen was designed for dynamic impact testing using a digital laser dynamic caustics experimental system. The effect of offset distance on the dynamic fracture behavior of PMMA specimens with semicircular arc pre-cracks in two different directions was investigated. It was found that the pre-crack initiates anew when the horizontal distance between the moving crack and the semicircular arc pre-crack is small. With increasing horizontal distance, the pre-crack attracts and then repels the crack. When the distance reaches a critical threshold, the pre-crack has no significant effect on the moving crack. The conclusions are not affected by the direction of the semicircular arc pre-crack. Additionally, the crack deflection angle and horizontal offset distance follow a linear function.

Effect of double holes on crack propagation in PMMA plates under blasting load by caustics method

Chengxiao Li et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the crack propagation behavior of a polymethyl methacrylate plate with double holes under explosive load using a new digital laser dynamic caustics system. The interaction process between the explosion stress wave and the empty hole reflected stress wave is analyzed, as well as the deflection law of the explosion crack. The relationship between the propagation distance, velocity, stress intensity factor of the explosion crack tip, and the distance between the two holes is also discussed. Additionally, numerical simulations are used to analyze the explosion process and obtain the time-varying law of the stress between the double holes.
