Vascular graft with native-like mechanical properties

Yuriy Snyder et al.

Summary: Elastomeric SG-80A and SG-93A polyurethanes were electrospun into microfibrous vascular grafts, which were compared with coronary arteries in terms of mechanical properties, suture retention strength, and burst pressure. In vitro evaluation showed no degradation of the graft materials in enzymatic or oxidative environment over 30 days, and both grafts supported the adhesion of PBOECs.

Accelerated tissue regeneration in decellularized vascular grafts with a patterned pore structure

Atsushi Mahara et al.

Summary: Decellularized tissues typically have low host cell migration due to dense collagen and elastin fibers. However, introducing patterned micropores can accelerate host cell infiltration, with distances shorter than 250 µm showing the most efficient cell migration.

Carrier-Free Trehalose-Based Nanomotors Targeting Macrophages in Inflammatory Plaque for Treatment of Atherosclerosis

Ziyu Wu et al.

Summary: The study reports a carrier-free nanomotor that utilizes nitric oxide (NO) as a driving force to induce autophagy of macrophages and improve abnormal lipid metabolism in atherosclerosis. The nanomotor achieves precise targeting and high biological availability with the use of trehalose, L-arginine, and phosphatidylserine.

Potential of Biodegradable Synthetic Polymers for Use in Small-diameter Vascular Engineering

Olesia Osipova et al.

Summary: In patients with chronic atherosclerotic artery occlusions, bypass or replacement surgery is necessary. Synthetic polytetrafluoroethylene prostheses are commonly used when autogenous veins are not available. However, these prostheses have poor results in small-diameter arteries and xenogeneic vessels and biopolymer-based prostheses also tend to have mechanical strength issues. Developing vascular prostheses for small-diameter arteries is crucial to overcome the risk of graft thrombosis. Various biodegradable synthetic polymers, such as polyhydroxybutyrate, polyglycolic acid, polycaprolactone, polyurethane and their copolymers, are being studied for this purpose, with polyurethanes showing the most promise due to their biodegradation rate, strength, and elasticity.

Paraquat induced oxidative stress, DNA damage, and cytotoxicity in lymphocytes

Soheila Alizadeh et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of paraquat on oxidative stress, DNA damage, and cytotoxicity in peripheral lymphocyte cells, as well as pathological changes in various tissues. The results showed that higher doses of paraquat caused more severe damage to DNA and cell membranes, but gradual exposure to higher doses resulted in reduced damage, possibly due to the activation of antioxidant defense mechanisms.

Development of L-arginine-based poly(ester urethane)urea for enhanced vascular adaptability

Bai Shan et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the potential of using L-arginine-based poly(ester urethane)urea (PEUU) with biodegradable poly(c-caprolactone) (PCL) for vascular grafts. By blending electrospinning with PCL in a given mass ratio, the prepared electrospun PCL/PEUU fibrous membranes show suitable mechanical properties and cell proliferation ability. The PEUU50 electrospun membrane with 1/1 mass ratio of PCL/PEUU exhibits flexibility and mechanical properties matching native blood vessels.

Electrospun nanofiber scaffold for vascular tissue engineering

Alex P. Rickel et al.

Summary: Due to the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases, there is a large demand for small diameter vascular grafts, with electrospinning being considered a promising approach. A successful tissue engineered vascular graft needs to match the mechanical properties of native tissue and possess characteristics that do not lead to thrombosis or immune response.

Peptidomimetic Polyurethanes Inhibit Bacterial Biofilm Formation and Disrupt Surface Established Biofilms

Apoorva Vishwakarma et al.

Summary: Over 80% of chronic bacterial infections in humans are linked to biofilms, which provide significant resistance to antibiotics and host immune responses. Water-soluble synthetic peptidomimetic polyurethanes have shown potential in disrupting established biofilms and inhibiting biofilm formation without toxicity to mammalian cells.
