Reverse thermo-responsive biodegradable shape memory-displaying polymers

Aaron Sloutski et al.

Summary: This study introduces shape memory-displaying (SM), reverse thermo-responsive (RTR) biodegradable polymers consisting of poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO-PPO-PEO) triblocks, and polycaprolactone (PCL) segments. The interplay between their composition, morphology and mechanical properties and their SM and RTR behavior was investigated as the polymers degraded. The polymers displayed remarkable SM and RTR behavior, and retained their excellent properties during degradation, making them suitable for various applications.

Thermo-responsive and electro-active shape memory poly (styrene-b-isoprene-b-styrene)/poly(ethylene-co-1-octene)/graphene composites: Effect of size of graphene nanoplatelets

Emre Tekay et al.

Summary: In this study, thermally and electrically triggered polymeric composites were prepared using graphene nanoplatelets as conductive fillers. The results showed that the size of the graphene fillers played a crucial role in shaping memory performance, with larger size fillers aiding in shape fixing and smaller size fillers enhancing shape recovery ability. Additionally, the thermal stability of the composites was significantly improved with the addition of graphene fillers.

Carbon nanotube enhanced shape memory epoxy for improved mechanical properties and electroactive shape recovery

Siddhant Datta et al.

Summary: This study focuses on a novel carbon nanotube-based electroactive shape memory epoxy nanocomposite with improvements in static and dynamic mechanical properties, achieved through a specialized fabrication process. The high CNT wt. fraction of 30% leads to significant enhancement in mechanical performance due to effective interfacial interaction between SMEP and CNTs at the nanoscale. Dynamic mechanical measurements showed notable improvements in elastic modulus and storage modulus for the buckypaper-enhanced SMEP, demonstrating potential for practical applications in stress-free electrical actuation and shape memory response.

Thermo-responsive shape memory behavior of poly(styrene-b-isoprene-b-styrene)/ethylene-1-octene copolymer thermoplastic elastomer blends

Emre Tekay

Summary: Thermally-triggered shape memory polymers (SMPs) can change shape when exposed to heat. Blending PEO and SIS thermoplastic elastomers resulted in a 60PEO/40SIS blend with the best shape memory performance, showing 95.74% shape fixing and 98.98% shape recovery. The presence of semi-crystalline PEO improved shape fixing, while SIS content enhanced shape recovery capability, despite the immiscibility of these polymers.

DLP 4D-Printing of Remotely, Modularly, and Selectively Controllable Shape Memory Polymer Nanocomposites Embedding Carbon Nanotubes

Alejandro Cortes et al.

Summary: The study investigated novel electro-activated shape memory polymer composites (SMPCs) for digital light processing 3D printing, showing how the composition of the photocurable system and the incorporation of CNTs impact the printability and electrical conductivity. By remotely heating the nanocomposite using the Joule effect, a significant electrically-triggered responsiveness was confirmed, enabling a high shape fixity and shape recovery ratio. Additionally, the research demonstrated the feasibility of activating selective shape recovery through electro-activation for potentially creating remotely controllable smart devices in 4D printing.
