Innate antiviral responses in porcine nasal mucosal explants inoculated with influenza A virus are comparable with responses in respiratory tissues after viral infection

Sofie M. R. Starbaek et al.

Summary: Nasal mucosal explant (NEs) cultured at an air-liquid interface provides a more accurate model for studying host-pathogen interactions and antiviral immune responses. In this study, the innate antiviral responses in porcine NEs were characterized using high-throughput qPCR. The gene expression profiles revealed upregulation of genes involved in inflammation and apoptosis, as well as downregulation of genes involved in viral recognition and interferon response. Additionally, the expression of viral pattern recognition receptors and type I and III interferons were upregulated in IAV-infected NEs, along with several interferon-stimulated genes.

Immune Regulator Retinoic Acid-Inducible Gene I (RIG-I) in the Pathogenesis of Cardiovascular Disease

Hao Wang et al.

Summary: RIG-I is a cytosolic pattern recognition receptor that plays a role in both antiviral and non-viral infectious diseases. It is widely expressed in the cardiovascular system and has potential research value in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases.

Early immune responses in skin and lymph node after skin delivery of Toll-like receptor agonists in neonatal and adult pigs

Sandra Vreman et al.

Summary: This study investigated the immune-stimulatory potential of different Toll-like receptor agonists (TLRa) in neonatal and adult pigs vaccinated in the skin using dissolving microneedle patches. The results showed that TLR7/8a induced the most prominent early inflammatory and immune cell responses, particularly in the skin. There were age-dependent differences in the upregulation of immune response related genes between neonatal and adult pigs after vaccination.

PRV-1 Infected Macrophages in Melanized Focal Changes in White Muscle of Atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar) Correlates With a Pro-Inflammatory Environment

Muhammad Salman Malik et al.

Summary: The black spots in white skeletal muscle of farmed Atlantic salmon, which affects about 20% of the fish, are potentially related to the polarization status of immune cells and cell-mediated immune responses, with PRV-1 infection playing a role. Red spots showed a pro-inflammatory microenvironment with abundant M1-polarized macrophages expressing iNOS2, while black spots had a high number of anti-inflammatory M2-polarized macrophages containing melanin, indicating a healing phase. Co-localization of PRV-1 with CD8(+) and MHC-I expressing cells suggests a targeted immune response taking place in the spots.

Temperature Variation and Host Immunity Regulate Viral Persistence in a Salmonid Host

David J. Paez et al.

Summary: The study showed that host immune responses and water temperature interact to modulate virus persistence, with higher temperatures accelerating virus replication but colder temperatures favoring longer virus persistence with host immune responses. The viral RNA mainly persisted in kidney and spleen tissues, suggesting these tissues are favored targets of the virus. The results provide insights into potential host-pathogen responses to climate change by understanding the environmental drivers of host-pathogen interactions within hosts.
