A risk assessment of equine piroplasmosis entry, exposure and consequences in the UK

Summary: This study conducted a qualitative risk assessment of the risk of Equine Piroplasmosis (EP) entry, exposure, and consequences to the UK equine population. The results showed that the risk of EP entry via infected equidae with acute disease is very low but medium with subclinical carrier animals. Entry through ticks or importation of blood is very low. The risk of EP exposure to susceptible equidae in the UK is low through tick bites, contaminated needles, and blood, but very high through transplacental transfer. However, the consequences of EP endemic establishment are of high significance to the UK equine industry.

Summary: The study analyzed the risks of SARS-CoV-2 disease to free-living bat species in England through fieldworkers undertaking conservation activities, finding that the probability of exposure to bats ranged from negligible to high depending on proximity to infected individuals. The likelihood of infection and dissemination of the virus through bat populations was estimated to be high and medium, respectively, with a low likelihood of clinical disease occurring in infected bats.

Summary: In this study, we used a qualitative risk analysis method to assess the risk of a foot-and-mouth disease outbreak in zone 2 of Botswana due to interaction between cattle and buffalo. The assessed risk was rated as "moderate" and had a moderate level of uncertainty, suggesting the need for mitigation options before allowing the import of cattle and cattle products from zone 2. Due to high costs and challenges posed by elephants, we concluded that the national goal of eradicating foot-and-mouth disease in all livestock-rearing areas should be revised to a more achievable outcome for zone 2. We recommend implementing husbandry management practices and marketing approaches that acknowledge the co-existence of cattle and wildlife in zone 2 and focus on food product safety guarantees along the value chain, which is crucial for the sustainability of foot-and-mouth disease management and livelihoods in zone 2.

Results showed alignment between high-risk categories and actual FMD outbreaks, indicating the usefulness of the framework as a decision support tool in risk-based disease surveillance and control.
